The Camp Nurse is responsible for the daily health care services provided at a Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) camp property. This position provides daily, weekly, and on-call health care and medication administration for all persons, working under the technical supervision of an on-call licensed physician. This role supports the property, hospitality, operational, program, and cabin leadership teams as needed as part of the camp team. A primary function is to ensure that each member, guest and visitor receives the highest caliber of service. Responsibilities
Ensure the implementation of health and emergency procedures as written in the Camp Health Plan, Medical Standing Orders, and in accordance with the Colorado Dept. of Health & Child Protective Services and American Camp Association (ACA) standards. Work within the communicable disease plan to ensure safe and healthy practices and measures to mitigate the spread of illness. Provide support in routine health care and emergency situations in consultation with the Executive Director in keeping with established health care guidelines and daily operating procedures. Collaborate with camp health team and camp directors to provide health care for all persons within camp program guidelines. Communicate and advise the Executive Director and staff on camper accommodations to address special medical/health/wellness considerations. Maintain constant and professional communication with caregivers regarding the health care and services provided to campers. Provide support in routine and emergency health procedures in consultation with the executive camp director and established guidelines. Participate as an active member of the camp staff team within all aspects of camp program. Provide advice to health staff regarding health issues that arise. Provide in-person Medication Administration Training for staff who will assist in proper dispensing of medication. Ensure proper execution of procedures for dispensing routine medications and charting of all medication. Review medical & health treatment log forms, illness, injury, and incident reports and MARs; follow up to ensure campers receive medications as directed. Communicate supply/equipment needs, changes in procedures, and site hazards to health staff and the executive director. Maintain positive relationships with health and emergency service providers and the public. Act in loco parentis regarding the health services for all campers in overnight camp sessions; advise and counsel campers in daily living, camp activities, and peer relationships; provide overnight supervision and care when housed in Health Center. Provide ongoing health/medical/first aid support for camp staff and campers; advise staff on health procedures; verify first aid and medical reports; monitor staff first aid treatment. Supervise and guide the health team including Health Assistant(s) and Wellness Supervisor. Coordinate and communicate schedules to campers and staff; participate in staff meetings and training. Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to staff, volunteers, and campers. Interact with digital systems (WorkBright, CampMinder, Office365, Slack, Instagram, Facebook) as applicable. Cross-Functional & GSCO Responsibilities
Develop work plans with the Executive Camp Director in conjunction with the camp strategic plan, budget, and policies. Provide and/or support camp-wide emergency procedures during on-site and off-site incidents. Support wellness practices, mental, social, and emotional health in conjunction with the wellness supervisor. Support operational, program, cabin leadership, and director staff; assist site, kitchen, and housekeeping staff as needed. Maintain positive relationships with health and emergency service providers and support diversity and inclusiveness. Job Qualifications
Education and/or Formal Training Current Colorado state license in health care (minimum of RN). Current BLS certification. Willing to obtain a medication administration/QMAP instructor qualification. Must have current or willingness to obtain: Child Abuse Mandated Reporter and Universal Standard Precautions. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience Experience within the health care industry. Flexible and adaptable to changing situations, environment, and procedures. Experience within crisis management. Preferred experience working with children and in outdoor programs or camp settings; experience with diverse populations; leadership experience with children, peers, or staff. Willing to provide innovative program development and facilitation in an informal, outdoor setting. Additional Requirements Criminal background check compliant with GSCO standards. Must be at least 21 years of age. Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and 5 years driving experience. Must be able to live on site during the camp season. PPE First-aid supplies, emergency and health care equipment Health records and forms, reports, insurance claim forms, etc. Potential injuries from falls, cuts, etc. Office equipment (computer, telephone, copier) Handheld radios Golf carts/vehicles as directed Working Environment & Physical Activities
Camps at altitudes 8,000-9,500 feet. Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and extended overnight periods. Support health, emergency, camper supervision, and program implementation. Daily exposure to loud environments; outdoor activities in inclement weather. Extensive walking/hiking >2 miles/day on uneven terrain; able to lift at least 50 pounds. Good hearing, vision, and mobility; strong interpersonal skills for diverse groups.
