Responsibilities

Administrative Functions : Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing daily nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing the long term care facility; participate in developing, maintaining, and updating policies and procedures; ensure reference material is current; recommend materials to support resident care; ensure Nursing Service Procedures Manual is current and followed; prepare written and oral reports to the Director; periodically review departmental policies, procedures, manuals, and job descriptions; coordinate nursing services with other resident services; ensure compliance with job descriptions; participate in the facility's quality assurance program; participate in surveys by government agencies; assist in planning discharge plans; meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan services, programs, and activities; admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required; complete accident/incident reports; interpret policies to staff, residents, visitors, and agencies; perform administrative duties (forms, reports, studies, charting).

Committee Functions : Attend committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assurance, etc.); prepare reports for committees; provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee; participate in Care Plan Committee agenda and discharge plan reviews; implement committee recommendations as instructed.

Personnel Functions : Ensure adequate nursing staff coverage; delegate authority to Charge Nurses; ensure all nurse aides are trained and supervised; conduct daily rounds; monitor absenteeism; enforce policies and dress codes; review complaints and grievances; maintain good interdepartmental relations; foster a warm and calm unit environment; participate in staff performance evaluations and staffing decisions; enforce fair disciplinary actions; report occupational exposures and incidents; ensure secure access to facility information systems and protect resident information.

Nursing Care Functions : Inform nursing staff of admissions and room assignments; prepare rooms for admissions; greet and accompany new admissions; coordinate rounds with physicians; ensure timely physician notes and orders; plan resident care with residents, families, and physicians; monitor changes in resident condition; ensure direct nursing care by licensed personnel or trained aides; review and ensure quality documentation; perform IV starts, specimen collection, vital signs; admit/transfer/discharge residents; monitor and improve care; authorize restraints per policy; supervise medication administration and observe schedules; maintain cleanliness of treatment areas; ensure calls for help are answered; coordinate discharge transportation; notify families of deaths; assist in funeral arrangements if requested.

Staff Development : Develop and deliver in-service training; support annual in-service programs (OSHA, HIPAA, Safety, Infection Control, etc.); plan clinical supervision for nurse aides; participate in continuing education to maintain licensure.

Safety and Sanitation : Develop safety standards; ensure training for exposure-prone tasks; provide PPE; enforce hand hygiene; conduct safety drills; participate in infection control and hazard reporting; ensure safe operation of equipment; maintain MSDS records; enforce safe lifting and moving procedures; respond to hazardous conditions; support safety programs and reporting; ensure proper labeling and chemical safety.

Equipment and Supply Functions : Advise on equipment and supply needs; maintain adequate stock; assist in preventive maintenance planning; ensure safe operation of equipment; monitor usage to avoid waste; ensure MSDSs for hazardous chemicals are on file.

Care Plan and Assessment Functions : Participate in assessments and care plans; involve residents in care planning; review and update care plans; ensure staff refer to care plans when delivering care; assist in planning and revising the MDS and RAPs; ensure treatments align with care plans and resident wishes.

Budget and Planning Functions : Monitor economic conditions and adjust nursing services to maintain quality care; recommend equipment needs; report fraud or false billing concerns.

Supervisory Requirements : Assist in supervising and managing nursing staff; exercise administrative authority as an RN for assigned duties.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience : Nursing degree from an accredited college or university; training in rehabilitative/restorative nursing; 2+ years experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.

Language Skills : Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; ability to read technical procedures and policy manuals; able to present information and respond to questions.

Mathematical Skills : Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Reasoning Ability : Ability to make independent decisions, solve problems, work tactfully with staff, residents, families, and external parties; leadership and supervisory ability; plan and implement programs and procedures; provide care appropriate to residents’ age-related needs.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Active RN license in the state; current CPR certification; PCC knowledge preferred; ongoing continuing education; maintain good standing with the State Board of Nursing.

Physical Demands : Ability to move throughout the day; speak and write clearly; cope with mental and emotional stress; good vision and hearing or use of assistive devices; able to relate to ill or elderly residents; ability to push/pull/lift at least 25 pounds; able to assist in evacuations if needed.

Work Environment : Office and nursing areas; frequent interruptions; work with residents, families, and staff; may work beyond normal hours; possible on-call during emergencies; exposure to infectious materials and chemicals; ability to adapt to a dynamic healthcare setting.
