Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia CNOR Certification BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion Department Specific: APRNs requesting to be privileged as First Assists in perioperative services will be required to have ANOR approved CNOR Certification ACLS at the department’s discretion Experience: Eligible new graduates will be considered Preferred Qualifications: Acute care, surgical or orthopedic experience preferred; Casting experience preferred Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant, or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant required Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of orthopedic patients, including biological, social and psychological assessments. The APP coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, reviews the plan of care with the clinical team, participates in directing that care, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-operative services, and coordinates discharge planning/follow-up as applicable. The APP participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students and provides healthcare services consistent with state law and licensing/certification requirements. Services may include, but are not limited to: Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants Licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion ACLS at the department’s discretion Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred Education and/ or Licensure

Acute care, surgical or orthopedic experience preferred; Casting experience preferred Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following statements describe the general nature of work performed by people in this position and are not an all-inclusive list of duties. Other duties may be assigned. Manage comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families in the ambulatory setting Complete daily rounds; participate in pre-procedure evaluations and peri-operative patient care including first assisting in the operative suite Complete integrated assessments and order additional tests or consults as appropriate in collaboration with orthopedic faculty or established guidelines Perform and communicate results of diagnostic tests per clinical guidelines Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings Conduct succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record Coordinate discharge planning and follow-up for outpatient procedures/surgeries as applicable Educate patients and families; teach perioperative planning and necessary referrals to other team members Demonstrate expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum and identify unstable or complex care situations Recognize emergencies and initiate appropriate care Evaluate patients and coordinate follow-up or tests in the ambulatory setting Assist in collection of outcome measures where applicable Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision making Utilize equipment safely and base decisions on scientific principles and standards of care Educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies Promote learning, update knowledge throughout the year, complete clinical competencies, and serve as a resource for staff Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel Participate in community programs and distribution of literature as appropriate Document plans of care, interventions and evaluations clearly in the medical record following hospital policies Collaborate with leaders and staff to improve patient outcomes and lead practice changes in orthopedics Work with medical and nursing staff to support problem solving and professional development Participate in inter-disciplinary approaches to patient care, program development and education; serve as a professional role model Promote innovation in the expanded role across inpatient, perioperative, and ambulatory settings Participate in committees and task forces as assigned Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate Review orthopedic data from patient registries and reports and implement changes as needed Participate in clinical trials and research studies as applicable Assist faculty, administrators and directors in outcome measures collection Other duties/projects as assigned Physical Requirements
