Relocation Assistance (based on eligibility) Position Overview This full-time Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) position supports Operating Room education across the Duke University Health System. Key responsibilities include providing education and support for Operating Room staff across DUHS entities, facilitating the New to the Operating Room (NTTOR) program, managing Periop 101 contract utilization, supporting additional OR-related educational initiatives as assigned, and participating in system-wide instruction of Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses. Operating Room Experience Is Required Shift: The role may require occasional early morning availability to accommodate OR rounding schedules and travel between Duke facilities as well as occasional weekend work. Role Description The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) across the entities of Duke Medicine provides staff development expertise as an educator, consultant, facilitator, change agent, leaders and researcher. The CNE supports the bedside nurse’s development and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence in evidenced-based nursing practice. This occurs through assessment, development, planning, implementation and evaluation of competency assessment, continuing education and leadership development. The CNE also acts as a professional role model to create a positive nursing climate within Duke Medicine and across DUHS units. Travel may be required to facilitate collaboration with entities across Duke Medicine. Must be able to withstand physical activity including the ability to move or lift at least 50 pounds. Duties and Responsibilities Educator Conducts needs assessments using a variety of strategic tools Assists learners in needs assessment and outcome identification Incorporates adult learning principles into education planning, implementation, and evaluation Coordinates orientation of new staff Develops/coordinates education plans for initial and ongoing competency validation Develops/coordinates core education for patient population nursing care Develops/coordinates core education for bedside leadership development Prepares and maintains materials for educational programs Evaluates instructional materials and adapts content to learner needs Delivers competence-based programs to improve skills and knowledge retention Develops evidence-based educational materials Supports staff development with remediation, certification, mentoring, life support, product roll-outs, etc Evaluates program effectiveness Plans short- and long-term education initiatives Teaches content as needed within clinical expertise Consultant Serves as an educational consultant to facilities, task forces, committees, and projects Responds to regulatory mandates for research and management of sentinel events Collaborates to promote quality patient care and safety Advises on educational strategies for clinical standards implementation Consults with staff regarding individual learning needs Researcher Supports integration of research into practice Documents effectiveness of the staff development role Incorporates current educational evidence into practice Contributes to nursing research and applies findings to program planning Facilitator Facilitates adult learning and fosters a learning climate across the health system Identifies and recruits internal/external educational resources Coordinates educational activities across Duke Medicine Participates in committees and projects and supports teambuilding and leadership development Change Agent Responds to changes in nursing practice and aligns programs with organizational goals Maintains flexibility when managing multiple roles Interprets and communicates across disciplines Promotes a safe and healthy work environment Leader Models excellence and safety Maintains educational and clinical competencies Seeks opportunities to develop staff Integrates ethical principles into practice Leads committees and projects related to educational activities Qualifications At This Level Education BSN required MSN preferred Experience 3 years of nursing, clinical educator, or nursing instructor experience required OR experience required A Master's Degree in Nursing may be substituted for 2 years of required experience Licensure and Certification Current or compact RN licensure in North Carolina or a participating compact state BLS required BLS, ACLS, PALS, and/or NRP Instructor certification preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) Knowledge of audiovisual equipment is advantageous Duke is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to providing employment opportunity without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or military status.
