The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher. Our goal is to give students meaningful work that builds on what they are learning in the classroom. Our programs are project based. Students will receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in our project expo at the end of the summer. Job Description Job Summary/Objective: The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Southwire provides interns and co-ops with “real world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo.
Note: All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation. Ready to explore new horizons in your own development as a Southwire Intern or Co-op and help us power what’s possible?
Key Responsibilities
Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.
You will also collaborate on other exciting projects and work with talented peers and inspirational leaders, many of whom began as interns and co-ops themselves.
You will be provided a robust developmental experience through an immersive onboarding and offboarding experience, assigned a mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and community service /volunteer initiatives.
You will have the opportunity to impact the future of the organization, all the while being exposed to a world-class program community.
Finally, our rising senior interns and co-ops are considered for full-time employment opportunities.
Long Description This position will support the Development Engineering team by contributing to key projects and initiatives that align with Southwire’s strategic goals. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively. They should be eager to learn, demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, and possess excellent communication and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct research, analyze data, and present findings to support engineering projects and process improvements
Assist with the design, development, and testing of new or modified equipment, components, and systems
Support data collection and analysis for root cause investigations, failure analysis, and quality improvement initiatives
Assist in updating and creating engineering documentation, standard operating procedures, and process flow diagrams
Collaborate on brainstorming of ideas for new products or product enhancements
Participate in Laboratory testing activities, or process trials under guidance from engineers
Utilize CAD software to create or revise drawings, layouts, or models as needed for project work
Perform time studies or capacity analyses to support production and process optimization efforts
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other deliverables to communicate project progress and results
Engage with cross-functional teams including maintenance, production, quality, and safety to drive project success
Support internal and external communication efforts related to engineering projects and initiatives
Perform other engineering-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum 2.5 GPA
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in ME or EE
Reliable transportation to and from work
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Solidworks, Inventor, or Autocad, Minitab
In addition to above, Co-ops must include:
Co-ops will complete 3 rotations for a 1.5 year commitment. The co-op will need to still be enrolled in school during these semesters to be eligible
Ability to work 40-hour work weeks during rotation
Willingness and ability to commit to a minimum of 3 rotations
