The Vibration Specialist/ Balance Engineer is a key part of the MD&A Outage Services Division (OSD) responsible for vibration diagnostics, testing, troubleshooting, and balancing of turbine and turbine-adjacent turbomachinery focused on meeting customer and business goals. This position will be focused on machinery diagnostics needs of the business.
The position places high emphasis on supporting client needs as they pertain to evaluating machinery condition based on rotordynamic analysis, recommending corrective action including vibration response assessment, calculating/performing field balancing, and verifying mechanical integrity in accordance with turbomachinery design, operational parameters, and acceptable industry standards.
Responsibilities
Diagnose machinery problems based upon vibration data, test data, performance data, operational data, mechanical design data, and customer communications
Perform mechanical troubleshooting, condition assessment, and corrective action recommendation including balancing as necessary, of customer rotating equipment assets
Possess and be able to convey knowledge of steam turbine and gas turbine operation, components, and functions, as well as similar knowledge of auxiliary systems of steam and gas turbines.
Provide leadership, technical direction, and assistance to the customer, user, and other field personnel in the diagnostic evaluation and long-term maintenance of customers’ rotating machinery
Possess and be able to convey strong understanding of rotordynamics, vibration diagnostics, and failure modes of rotating machinery.
Express excellent written and oral communication skills to convey technical concepts to business and technical personnel
Express ability to foresee a customer’s need for information or work practice to achieve higher machinery asset and plant reliability
Complete timely standard service reports, invoicing packages, and other administrative requirements
React to customer required travel in a timely manner, while bringing all required service, testing, and diagnostic equipment
Complete documentation of findings / recommendations / corrective actions
Create, review, and interpret technical reports and customer supplied information
Professionally communicate with customer and other team members
Assess job site safety and perform services as per company and client environmental, health, and safety policies
Understand Term & Conditions commitments
Drive customer satisfaction through commitment to quality
Support the growth initiatives of the business
Understand contractual commitments and deadlines
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Technology from an accredited college or university
Minimum 5 years of machinery diagnostics field experience including but not limited to mechanical troubleshooting, vibration and rotordynamic analysis, testing, balancing, alignment, reliability assessment, mechanical design, and maintenance of large steam and/or gas turbine generators (turbomachinery)
Eligibility Requirements
Travel up to 80%, as required (varies by time of year)
Work significant over-time
Possess a valid driver's license and passport (or able to obtain a passport)
Obtain TWIC Card
Pass both background and drug screening
Desired Characteristics
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English language
Self-starter, independently accountable with minimal supervision requirement
Strong written and oral communication skills to convey technical concepts to business and technical personnel
Experience working under stressful working conditions
Willingness to travel on short advance notice
Strong computer skills; both Hardware and Software, plus MS Office software skills
Strong aptitude of mechanical trouble shooting skills. "Hands-on approach".
Experience reading, interpreting, and understanding mechanical prints, P&ID drawings, etc
Knowledge of Large Steam Turbines, Combustion Turbines and power generation applications and systems
Experience with networking and protocols
Knowledge of rotating machinery operation, mechanical design, test equipment & procedures, and controls systems
Knowledge of machinery vibration monitoring, protection, measurement and management systems, products, and services
Knowledge or experience with at least one or more of the following: mechanical vibration, rotating machinery design, vibration and/or diagnostics, rotordynamic analysis, machinery balancing, testing, and alignment
Knowledge or experience with at least one or more of the following vibration analysis software and data acquisition systems: Bently Nevada ADRE Sxp and Mechtell Turbobalancer , etc.
