Work Location: School site; may attend field trips and other class activities as needed.
Job Summary Under the direction of the Behavior Therapist, the Behavioral Therapy Assistant (BTA) assists in the instruction and supervision of individual and groups of students. Responsibilities may include teaching replacement behaviors, managing difficult behaviors, facilitating peer interactions, and other supports as assigned. The BTA may work in special and/or general education classrooms; positions may be fixed or variable throughout the school day and year depending on student needs. Some work may require handling physical risk during evasion or intervention. Occasional field trips or other class activities may be required.
Responsibilities
Implement student behavior interventions which may include principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Integrated Play Groups, PECS, or other district-approved methodologies
Implement instructional and behavioral programs as developed by the Behavior Specialist or Mental Health Specialist and IEP Team
Assist Behavior Specialist in providing training, modeling, and consultation to classroom teachers, support staff, and parents
Collect data as directed by the Behavior Specialist
Monitor goals and objectives for each student
Facilitate play and social interaction
Participate in regular student planning meetings to coordinate behavioral therapy goals with the educational program
Attend ongoing training as provided by the District
Substitute for para-professionals as needed
Qualifications Knowledge of (or willingness to learn):
Principles of ABA, Integrated Playgroups, PECS, or other district-approved methodologies
Crisis Prevention and Safe Handling
Health and safety regulations
Effective record-keeping techniques
English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
Established district procedures and policies
Ability To:
Work cooperatively with team members to implement intervention plans
Receive feedback and apply improvements
Maintain files and treatment logs
Apply therapy procedures while maintaining confidentiality
Understand and follow directions in English; communicate effectively in English
Work independently with minimal direction
Follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures
Complete tasks on schedule; arrive on time
Maintain a positive, engaging, high-energy teaching style with creative problem solving
Learn new routines and behavior management strategies
Personal Qualities
Maturity and good judgement
Professional appearance and image
Commitment to professional responsibility and academic excellence
Good health
Interest in working with students with autism and related needs
Education, Training And Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work, or related field required
Background in psychology/education is preferred
Experience with individuals with disabilities or related coursework
General Characteristics
Work Year: 186 Days; Hours: 6.5 hours/day (includes 30 min unpaid lunch); start/end times may vary by site
Salary: Classified Salary Schedule, Range 1
