Position: Field Veterinarian (Director) – Amarillo, TX Important: This is an emergency response agency role with potential rotating assignments away from headquarters up to two weeks at a time. May involve working in adverse conditions, irregular hours, and overtime. Overview

Serves as leadership to administer the animal health programs for the region within the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC). Oversees the region office, veterinary activities, disease control functions, and consultative services. Works closely with TAHC personnel; investigates incidents of animal disease and disseminates information on disease control and eradication. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Essential Job Functions

Serves as regional leadership supervising the work of others and agency functions. Leads and administers all animal health programs for the region; ensures programs and materials are updated and correctly applied. Contacts herd/flock owners within prescribed times and determines the extent of index herd/flock and/or adjacent herd or flock testing; completes herd/flock test and management plans and collaborates with owners to gain agreement on plans. Works with Region Managers to assign appropriate herd/flock work and follow-up tasks to inspectors. Coordinates with the Regional epidemiologist to ensure epidemiological investigations are completed within prescribed timeframes; checks accuracy and completeness of reports, test charts, lab reports, and related documents. Continuously re-evaluates affected herds/flocks to ensure proper disease management practices are employed. Oversees and provides procedural assistance and training to inspectors for collecting and submitting test samples for all program diseases. Participates in emergency preparedness and response activities; maintains current knowledge of agency roles in emergency management and plays an active role in surrounding areas. Oversees compliance with regulations in livestock markets, slaughter plants, inspections, and related areas; ensures phases of testing, market cattle identifications, epidemiological investigations, and traces are complete and timely; conducts field activities. Prepares and delivers educational presentations to industry, veterinary and community groups, agency staff, and associates when requested. Meet with producers, market owners, and stakeholders to address concerns not resolved by the Regional Manager. Oversees risk management programs within the Region Offices, including antigen controls and medical waste disposal. Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for other TAHC Departments to develop and update rules, materials, and documents. Performs Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) response activities. Collaborates with Region Directors/Veterinarians, the Deputy Executive Director, and the Director of Field Operations to distribute caseloads. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university. License to practice veterinary medicine in Texas (or ability to qualify within 1–3 months). USDA Veterinary Accreditation, Level II in Texas (or ability to qualify within 1–3 months). Must become certified as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician (FADD) within the first year of employment (provided the required class is available). Preferred: Large animal and wildlife experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of veterinary medicine principles, practices, and procedures; knowledge of agency regulations and livestock industry in Texas. Skill in computer use; strong oral and written communication. Ability to plan, implement and direct all aspects of animal health programs; supervise, train and coach others. Ability to work in all environmental conditions; establish professional relationships; strong organizational, leadership, and planning skills. Ability to travel and adjust work hours; promote disease control programs and supervise others. Physical and Other Requirements

Must have arm, hand, shoulder and back strength to handle and inspect livestock and harvested deer; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and safe driving record. Employment contingent on acceptable criminal background check and driving record; reliable transportation required. Mileage reimbursed at current rate. At time of hire, must show proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. (E-Verify); Selective Service registration or exemption if applicable.
