Overview
Serves as a staff psychologist at the full professional level, applying psychological principles in clinical, research training, and consultation areas.
Responsibilities
Select, administer, and interpret a wide variety of psychological test instruments for diagnosis and evaluation.
Provide direct patient care including assessment, evaluation, individual and group therapy, and counseling.
Plan treatment programs and disposition of cases under treatment as a member of the professional treatment team.
Participate in professional staff conferences concerning psychological methods and techniques.
Supervise and instruct trainees and other members of a multidisciplinary team in psychology.
Independently provide the full range of professional psychological services related to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and co-occurring disorders.
Establish and maintain positive, therapeutic relationships with clients; conduct crisis intervention and make appropriate referrals.
Design and modify treatment interventions based on evaluation of results; communicate findings effectively in writing and orally.
Minimum Requirements
A Doctorate from an accredited college or university in psychology, educational psychology, education with a specialization in counseling psychology, or a discipline deemed equivalent by the California Board of Psychology.
Physical Class II – Light work; may include occasional lifting to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, and considerable walking.
A license to practice as a psychologist issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience providing psychotherapeutic treatment to the mentally or emotionally ill.
Experience conducting psychological research and studies.
Experience collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
Experience supervising and instructing interns, residents, or unlicensed clinical psychologists in the field of psychology.
Special Requirement Information In order to qualify, you must include a photocopy of the diploma, a copy of official transcripts indicating the field of study, or a certificate with your application at the time of filing.
Examination Content The examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications (weighted 100%) and a qualifying Spanish/English proficiency test. The proficiency test will assess speaking, reading and writing. If you possess a Los Angeles County Language Proficiency certificate, you must attach a copy to your application. Applicants must achieve a passing score on the evaluation and a minimum qualifying score on the language proficiency test to be placed on the eligible register.
Special Information Past and present mental health clients and family members are encouraged to apply. Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Vacancy Information The resulting eligible register will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Mental Health as they occur.
Eligibility Information Applications will be processed on an as-received basis. Passing candidates will be promulgated to the eligible register. Names of candidates with a passing grade will be placed on the eligible register for 12 months following promulgation. No person may compete more than once every twelve (12) months.
