Provides and directs safe, effective, and culturally competent care for patients with acute medical and surgical conditions. Utilizes evidence-based practice and critical thinking to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate outcome-based care. Manage a diverse patient population including post-operative, medical, telemetry, and neurologic patients; supervise and coordinate care by LPNs, Patient Care Assistants, and other nursing staff. Facilitate communication with physicians, patients and families, and interdisciplinary team members. Adhere to MercyOne’s performance expectations and uphold Mission, Vision, and Values. Essential Functions

Conducts an initial assessment to gather data and assess new admissions within 30 minutes of arrival. Complete admission assessment database within 24 hours of admission. Identify patient problems and develop outcome/goal-based plans of care; initiate problem lists and incorporate relevant medical history. Collaborate with other health care disciplines to plan interventions and outcomes; implement the plan of care. Coordinate patient care with the team, case manager, social worker and other disciplines; assign and delegate tasks as appropriate. Prepare discharge planning, education, and instructions; reassess regularly to determine patient response and revise the plan as needed. Maintain documentation that is complete, comprehensive, and compliant with policy; ensure medication safety per policy. Demonstrate clinical competence and proficiency with electronic systems and nursing practice policies. Respond to cardiac events and monitor telemetry, recognizing arrhythmias and providing appropriate interventions when needed. Communicate effectively with the unit team, physicians, and other care providers; participate in unit-based committees as requested. Qualifications

Associate degree in nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Current Iowa RN license; Illinois license if working in IL (where applicable). American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required only if telemetry monitoring is active on the unit. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within 3 months of hire. High language and math skills; basic computer skills required. Physical and Working Conditions

Typically involves exposure to hazardous substances and infectious conditions; may require lifting 50-100 lbs and standing/walking for extended periods. Must comply with safety, infection control, and PPE procedures; be able to respond to emergencies and adapt to rapidly changing patient needs. Commitment and Equal Opportunity
