NURSING SUPERVISOR – Adult Hospitals – University Hospital Operating Room – Michigan Medicine
Provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice within the Unit. Participate as an active member of the leadership team focusing on daily staffing, scheduling and operational needs. The nursing supervisor will play an active role in recruitment, hiring, continuous quality improvement, safety, customer service, education and research.
Responsibilities
Select, hire and plan for staffing consistent with service needs and budget.
Schedule and assign clinical staff, arrange coverage as needed.
Supervise, mentor, counsel and evaluate staff as part of a continuous development program.
Support staff education, cross‑training and proficiency development.
Develop and foster teamwork and build trusting relationships.
Facilitate open communication with the ACNO, directors, peers, staff and physicians.
Counsel and discipline staff to enable achievement of unit and institutional objectives, particularly related to high quality patient care.
Facilitate and support a nursing practice environment that empowers, assigns autonomy and collaboration.
Plan, coordinate and evaluate quality assurance activities.
Participate in the development of patient care models and systems.
Serve as a role model to other departmental staff in the provision of direct patient care.
Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
Coordinate unit operations including instrument processing, equipment evaluation, specialty implants and specific surgeon requests.
Plan and monitor expenditures from payroll and commodity budgets.
Coordinate and control vendor site access and activity.
Participate in the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives.
Manage staffing, scheduling, benchmarking, work redesign and cost management strategies, planning and management of clinical operations.
Assist in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs.
Represent nursing and/or clinical department/unit on assigned committees.
Assist in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit.
Participate in and support the involvement of nursing staff in unit quality improvement activities.
Provide leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adopting evidence‑based changes in practice to daily work.
Promote and integrate research findings into clinical practice.
Support research activities on the unit, as indicated.
Facilitate collective activity in professional organizations.
Develop self professionally through continuing education, professional reading, and participation in professional organizations and networking.
Required Qualifications Minimum five (5) years of RN experience. Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in Operating Room. Nurse Leadership certification or completion within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate degree in Nursing and a Master’s degree in Nursing.
Evidence of charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.
Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or Nurse Executive (NE‑BC) certification, recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the ANCC.
Desired Qualifications
Master of Science in Nursing.
Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and educational research systems.
Demonstrated experience in direct workflow with peers.
Supervisory/management experience with staff development.
CNOR certification.
Experience with new program development.
Excellent customer service, team building and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to work with multiple disciplines.
Work Schedule Hours: 40 hours/week Shift: Day shift – hours will flex to department need
