About the Department

University Residences (UR) supports a diverse and inclusive student-centered community. Vision: Students living in University Residences engage in a community where they explore their passion, purpose and place at Western. UR houses approximately 4,300 students in nine residential communities and employs a staff that includes leadership and paraprofessional roles. The assistant resident director (ARD) is a full-time hourly (40 hours per week)/overtime‑eligible, 12‑month appointment, live‑in position within University Residences reporting to a supervising resident director (SRD). The ARD supports the SRD in managing a residential community of 550–700 students, focusing on: Developing diverse and inclusive communities Enhancing student learning Promoting equity, respect, and responsibility Providing conduct adjudication and hall council advisement Supervising and training paraprofessional staff Over the summer, ARDs work with summer athletic camps through University Residences Conferences and Guest Housing operations. ARDs must demonstrate the ability to work with diverse populations to create inclusive communities. They partner with the SRD to lead a student staff team in implementing a residential curriculum focused on three areas: personal wellness, inclusive community building, and career preparedness. The curriculum is titled University Residences Initiative for Student Engagement (URISE). Position Responsibilities

Lasting up to three (3) academic years in appointment, the ARD coordinates aspects of student life in a residential environment, provides conduct adjudication and hall council advisement, assists in building inclusive residence hall communities, and co-supervises and trains student staff. All responsibilities are under the direction of the SRD. Position Duties and Responsibilities

35% Student Development and Residence Education Plan and work with students and staff to promote inclusive communities and a safe, welcoming environment Provide leadership in implementing URISE through the SRD Maintain knowledge of multicultural competence and apply it to create inclusive practices Serve as a visible resource in the residence hall for student interaction Provide one-on-one interventions to at‑risk students under SRD guidance Co-advisor to RPBs with SRD responsibilities including weekly meetings, leadership development, and attending RPB meetings Ensure RPB follows university policies; oversee financial procedures Provide academic resources and referrals in collaboration with campus partners Communicate standards and student conduct information to residents Use URISE outcomes to facilitate and evaluate student learning Consult with Counseling and Wellness Center, Student Health Center, and others to make referrals Provide crisis and conflict management and mediation assistance 30% Staff Selection, Training, Supervision and Performance Evaluation Co‑supervise and evaluate twelve to fifteen Resident Advisors, one Residential Office Assistant, and one to two Inclusion Assistants Participate in recruitment and selection of paraprofessional staff Communicate and hold staff accountable for job expectations Conduct semiannual performance evaluations Facilitate one‑on‑ones, weekly staff meetings, and ongoing training Communicate staff, student, and community needs to departmental leadership Serve as a risk manager for the residential community 30% Administration Participate in departmental committees and support URISE curriculum tracking and evaluation Assist with departmental projects, events, and communications with UR Facilities on occupancy and front desk operations Oversee budgets for programs (approx. $5,000–$10,000) Coordinate summer operations with Conference and Guest Housing Maintain communications with the supervisor, Residence Life central office, and stakeholders 5% Campus‑Wide, 24‑Hour On‑Call Responsibilities Participate in a rotating 24‑hour on‑call system as the emergency responder for approximately 4,300 students Respond to student staff needs, medical/psychological crises, facility issues, and coordinate with appropriate staff and external partners in a timely manner Position Assignment and Remuneration

Positions may change based on departmental needs. ARDs receive an apartment and may move as needed. Requires obtaining a Washington state driver’s license within 30 days of start date. Remuneration: a 12‑month, 40‑hour workweek, full‑time hourly position with a furnished 1‑bedroom apartment, meals plan, professional development opportunities, and a full benefits package. Required Qualifications (By position start date)

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university Commitment to equity and inclusion and ability to foster an inclusive residence hall community At least two years of experience in a higher education setting Ability to plan and implement large‑scale events, processes, or initiatives Ability to fulfill administrative tasks and deadlines Preferred Qualifications

Experience with emergency response and crisis management Experience supervising or mentoring paraprofessional staff Experience working in a residence life program Experience in the selection and training of paraprofessional staff Conditions of Employment
