Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

Key Responsibilities
Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing service department and its programs.
Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures governing day‑to‑day functions.
Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, charting, etc.
Determine staffing needs; recommend the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed.
Assist in calculating the number of direct nursing personnel on duty each shift.
Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved training program.
Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours; make daily rounds to ensure performance of assignments.
Review complaints and grievances; enforce fair disciplinary action.
Participate in interviewing and selecting residents for admission.
Develop a written plan of care for each resident, identifying problems/needs, care to be given, goals to be accomplished and professional service responsible for each element of care.
Prepare and plan the nursing service department’s budget and submit to the Administrator.
Schedule, attend, and participate in nursing service meetings.
Demonstrate passion for caring as evidenced by interactions with coworkers, residents, families, and visitors.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge
Knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to age‑related needs of residents served.
Knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures; laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities.
Patience, tact, cheerful disposition, enthusiasm; willingness to handle difficult residents.
Education
Graduate of an approved Registered Nurse program; maintain current, unencumbered, active RN license in the state.
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
Experience
Minimum one (1) year of experience as a supervisor in a hospital, nursing care facility, or related health care facility.
Preference for minimum (6) months experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
Work Environment
Moves intermittently during working hours.
Frequent interruptions.
Interaction with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies under all conditions.
Exposure to hostile, emotionally upset residents, family members.
Works beyond normal duty hours, on weekends, and temporary positions when necessary.
Call back during emergency conditions.
Exposure to potential injuries, infectious waste, hazardous chemicals.
