Overview
Pathology Assistant - Per Diem at University of Miami. The Pathology Assistant - Per Diem (H) assists with the preparation and dissection of surgical specimens under the direction and supervision of a pathologist. The role includes preparing and selecting tissue samples for analysis, handling tissue banking, examining surgical pathology specimens, resections, and autopsies, recording findings, and sterilizing equipment. Core Responsibilities
Performs the gross examination and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens. Conducts postmortem examinations and prepares bodies to be released to funeral homes. Prepares tissue for pathological tests such as frozen section, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemical staining. Ensures proper sterilization and maintenance of equipment. Photographs gross and microscopic specimens, assists with educational conferences, and provides training to pathology personnel. Fulfills administrative, instructional, and supervisory roles as needed. Prepares medical records and history for each examinee. Obtains legal authorization for a patient’s autopsy. Acts as a liaison to other departments and laboratories to ensure quality healthcare. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and safeguards University assets. Qualifications

Department Specific Functions
I. Surgical Pathology: 50% Specimen triage. Obtain and review patient's clinical history. Describe/dictate gross features of specimens submitted to anatomic pathology. Prepare tissues for processing for light microscopy. Obtain samples for studies such as flow cytometry, research, cytogenetics, cultures. Perform special procedures including x-ray imaging, frozen sections, tumor triage in OR when resident is unavailable. Photograph gross specimens and microscopic slides. II. Administrative Duties: 50% Develop and maintain surgical pathology grossing protocols, policies, procedures, reports and data. Ensure proper maintenance of all equipment Ensure provision of adequate supplies for and cleanliness of the gross room. Perform supervisory/management duties. Teach pathology residents, medical students, pathology assistants, and grossing techs. III. Extra Clinical Duties (ECD) ECD is defined as voluntary resident level patient care related to training, includes additional compensation, and is performed in addition to the HSO’s regularly scheduled assignment. ECD duties are supervised by attending physicians or ILPs and are within the appropriate PGY level. ECD is separate and distinct from pull coverage and is paid by the appropriate service/cost center. ECD differs from moonlighting in that moonlighting is performed under a full medical license. Department Specific Qualifications
