Position Summary / Job Purpose The incumbent is responsible for sourcing, analyzing and negotiating goods and services for an area in which they specialize such as food, beverage, technical, IT, etc. They require comprehensive knowledge of specialized commodities in order to influence customers and suppliers in procurement decision of complex/critical goods and services.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Research suppliers from a variety of usual and unusual sources.

Develop a procurement and negotiation strategy based on few variables.

Perform moderately complex price analysis based on few variables and confer with suppliers to obtain product or service information such as price, availability and delivery schedule.

Negotiate price, availability, and work with Logistics to define transportation and delivery schedule (i.e., ordering and storing schedule).

Manage supplier performance to ensure consistent service, high quality and low costs of goods/services.

Work independently with minimum supervision and freedom of decision within guidelines. Seek guidance from management on unusual situations.

Provide guidance to junior positions (i.e., Buyer I, Buyer II).

Travel to attend trade shows, audit suppliers, visit ships for loadings, repositioning etc.

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and knowledge.

5+ years related procurement experience or specialized technical experience required.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with multiple projects and priorities.

Negotiation and analytical skills required.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in a multicultural environment with all levels of employees and management.

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Financial Responsibilities (For Management Roles Only)

$50,000 expenditure limit

Between $1-5M spend management for goods/services

Physical Demands Employees must sit, stand, write, review, type reports, compile data, operate a PC, communicate, listen, and assess information. May move office complex, travel to other office locations, lift, push, pull, or move 10-15 pounds. Occasionally required to walk to dock, ascend and descend vessel. Regularly travel domestically or internationally. Visual requirements include distant, close, and color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment Work inside/outside the office, possible domestic and international travel, shipboard functions. High noise level possible when visiting shipboard or offsite locations.
