Overview
Job Duties and responsibilities for veterinary support staff in a clinical setting. Works with Clinicians, clients, and patients to support medical procedures, patient care, and operations in the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). Responsibilities
Assist Clinicians, clients and patients with receiving, assessment, work-up, discharge, etc., and prepare patients for veterinary procedures including radiographic procedures, catheterizations, venipunctures, vaccinations, anesthesia, medications and treatments. Must be able to restrain and handle animals and/or assist with animal restraint and handling. With oversight by a DVM, apply clinical knowledge to diagnosis, treatment, and care; provide excellent service to DVMs and the medical team. Facilitate open communication and teamwork among clinical care team members (DVMs, students, veterinary technicians, etc.) to support positive patient outcomes. Under the direction of a DVM perform a variety of medical and diagnostic procedures and may perform intravenous and related therapies; perform hourly treatment to patients in Small Animal Wards and Intensive Care Unit. Perform triage and assist in care of patients in Emergency Room. Apply clinical knowledge to patient management and deliver outstanding customer service including greeting and receiving patients and clients, answering phone calls, and assisting with client and staff needs. Explain procedures and equipment to clients, residents, interns, senior veterinary students, and technician students; assist with teaching labs. Perform record-keeping tasks related to medical procedures, such as procedures completed, supplies used, patient status, client communications, and census information; ensure services and supplies are charged according to hospital fee schedule. Adhere to safety and infection control policies and procedures; work in a clinical setting. Assists in other service areas as needed; maintain a clean, stocked environment and ensure equipment is in working order; participate in daily rounds; perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician, or Director. Days/Hours: Thursday through Sunday, 8:00pm to 8:30am (3 12-hour days, 36 hours a week). Qualifications
All required qualifications must be documented on application materials. Veterinary Technician:
Graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program. Must be eligible for certification through MVMA/MAVT within one year of employment. Senior Veterinarian Technician:
Graduate of Veterinary Technician or equivalent program, certified as MVMA/MAVT technician or must be eligible to transfer certification or licensure to Minnesota. The VMC sees more than 35,000 cases annually, with specialists available in all areas of medicine and surgery. More than 50 veterinarians on staff have undergone many years of additional training to become board-certified specialists. The Veterinary Medical Center is comprised of the Small Animal Hospital, Piper Clinic at Leatherdale Equine Center, and the Large Animal Hospital, serving horses, farm animals, and occasionally zoo animals.
