The System Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN) PRN position is a licensed staff nurse who provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population. The RN may work across Houston Methodist hospitals, performing nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The role supports collaboration with physicians and interprofessional teams to deliver compassionate, quality care and achieve treatment outcomes. The position includes leadership opportunities such as serving as charge nurse, preceptor, or contributor to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management. Responsibilities

People Essential Functions

- Use therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families and the interprofessional team; collaborate on the plan of care. Contribute to teamwork, offer assistance, seek/give guidance, and apply feedback to improve patient outcomes. Service Essential Functions

- Follow patient and family-centered care standards; develop and communicate the plan of care, including discharge planning; provide patient teaching and evaluate understanding; advocate for patients and families. Quality/Safety Essential Functions

- Follow nursing process standards, regulatory requirements, and documentation practices; coordinate care for complex patients with the interprofessional team; utilize clinical judgment and evidence-based practices to improve patient safety and quality scores; document accurately. Finance Essential Functions

- Manage time effectively, document care timely, and contribute to unit resource utilization and cost targets through efficiency. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

- Identify areas for innovation and improvement; support evidence-based practice, performance improvement projects, and shared governance; assist with new care pathways and service line implementations. Education, Work Experience, and Certifications

Education

- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for required credentials. Work Experience

- Two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licenses and Certifications - Required

- RN license (Texas State Licensure – Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency) AND BLS (Basic Life Support) or Instructor (AHA) AND ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or Instructor (AHA) AND NIHSS Stroke Certification (AHA). Licenses And Certifications - Preferred

- Magnet certification (ANCC Recognized). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrates clinical competence and participates in ongoing skills and competency assessments. Proficient in English (speaking, reading, writing) essential to patient safety and effective communication. Effective communication with patients, families, physicians and the care team; strong assessment, organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently with sound clinical judgment; proficient time management; working knowledge of Microsoft products. Supplemental Requirements

Work Attire

- Scrubs; uniform not required; other department-approved attire as applicable. On-Call

- On-call requirements may apply during emergencies; note on-call status per department policy. Travel

- Travel within the Houston Metropolitan area may be required; some roles may not require travel outside the area. Work Environment and Employment Type
