Overview
RN - Surgery - Norris OR - Full Time 10 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Union). Keck Medicine of USC, Hospital, Los Angeles, California. As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to a specific population of patients. The perioperative registered nurse designs, coordinates, and delivers care to meet the identified needs of patients during the perioperative phase. Perioperative nurses assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate interventions based on criteria that support a standard of care. They address the impact of the surgical experience on the patient’s physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual responses across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. Perioperative nursing includes peer education and patient/family teaching, advocacy, environment control, resource management, asepsis maintenance, monitoring of physiological and psychological status, coordination of care across settings and disciplines, collaboration, and consultation. Responsibilities Adherence to Universal Patient Safety Goals in all areas of practice. Adheres to safety standards of labeling medication on and off the sterile field. Apply the nursing process to formulate and implement care plans (direct and indirect care). Perform skills essential to nursing actions. Delegate tasks based on scope of practice, preparation, and capability. Evaluate effectiveness of care and modify plans based on observation and information. Advocate for patients by initiating action to advance the plan of care and supporting changes. Ensure electrical, laser, and radiology safety. Ensure intraoperative MRI safety. Follow Correct Site Surgery and Universal Protocol (time out) standards. Perform autoclave/Steris operations with appropriate documentation. Communicate information to all staff using SBAR in handoffs regarding patient care and flow. Document patient charges, implant records, pathology specimens, and preoperative records accurately and timely. Utilize Cerner documentation and update preference cards as needed. Adhere to policies for instruments/sponges/sharps counts. Practice according to USCUH collaboration principles and demonstrate respectful teamwork and delegation. Follow policies, Title 22, and JCAHO Standards. Participate in professional practice development, committee work, research, policy development/review, and unit-based improvement projects. Demonstrate knowledge of current policies and awareness of new trends/technology. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical anatomy and procedures and apply it to prepare equipment, supplies, and instrumentation for procedures. Maintain specialty carts and ensure supplies are at par level, organized, and up-to-date. Prepare surgical suites daily (OR, run room, hallway, carts) to facilitate smooth operation of procedures. Assist in the smooth flow of surgical interventions by preparing for procedures with updated preference cards and knowledge of instruments and equipment. Participate in hospital and department PI activities and perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications: BSN or higher nursing degree (Grandfathered to BSN if hired prior to 12/2019). 1 year of operating room nursing in an acute care setting immediately prior to application. Excellent communication skills in English (speaking, reading, writing). Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and the ability to understand, follow, and perform duties, including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures, in accordance with policies and procedures. Preferred Qualifications: Licenses/Certifications: Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) valid California license. Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association. Fire Life Safety Training (LA City). If no card at hire, one must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration (required within LA City). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association (preferred). The hourly rate range for this position is $44.00 - $95.00.
