Position Overview

The Chief Engineer supervises the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical, electrical, and environmental systems of assigned equipment and personnel.

District Overview

Location

Based in Louisiana, the employee may reside anywhere along the Gulf Coast or Eastern Seaboard. The position follows a 21‑day on / 21‑day off schedule.

Responsibilities

Ensure vessel and operational compliance with company policies and applicable regulatory agencies. Maintain engine room fuel, lubrication oils, and other materials for safe operation. Communicate vessel repairs and maintenance with the Port Engineer. Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA). Keep accurate payroll records and review engine room crew performance. Assign engine room personnel to perform regular maintenance and repairs to pumps, motors, diesel engines, and other dredge equipment. Supervise repairs to ensure specification compliance. Maintain engine room logs, inventories, and maintenance records. Track and order fuel, oil, and water. Determine maintenance priorities. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Technical Group.

Qualifications

5+ years on a hopper dredge and/or qualified engine room experience preferred. Ability to work an 84‑hour work week and live aboard vessel for full rotation. Willingness to travel as required. Proficiency in standard office software packages. Preferred supervisory experience. Fluent use of verbal and written English and understanding of hand signals.

Required Certifications or Licenses

Driver’s license. Merchant Mariner Credential (preferred).
