Bridges & Structures Construction Engineer State of Utah – Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT)

Job Summary The UDOT is seeking an expert in bridge construction and inspection to develop, implement, and support the Structures Construction Inspection Program and oversee regional construction inspections. The successful candidate will provide leadership, guidance, and training on bridge construction best practices, contract administration, and quality improvement.

Principal Duties

Assist in developing training materials and providing structures construction training and support to construction inspectors and crews.

Conduct and attend meetings, conferences, and training to resolve bridge construction related problems and enhance knowledge of bridge and structure construction and contract administration.

Create field construction practices and checklists to support quality improvement of structures construction.

Review structural plans sets/contract documents and provide constructability reviews.

Develop commentary to assist with implementation and enforcement of specifications.

Develop consistency in administration of structures construction inspection through familiarity with policies and procedures associated with all aspects of the work.

Review and manage specification updates to improve clarity and quality.

Investigate field problems and provide structural construction recommendations and guidance to address construction related issues.

Verify quality control and quality assurance compliance with structures construction.

Track lessons learned and best practices to update specifications and training.

Visit project sites to review problems related to bridge and structure construction to lend guidance and assistance to region personnel.

Assist in review of working drawings submitted by contractors to supplement contract documents.

Supervise direct reports including hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.

Minimum Qualifications

Registered professional engineer (PE) in Utah.

At least four (4) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.

Supplemental Information Working Conditions – This position involves both office and field work with typical risks of each environment.

Physical Requirements – The employee may sit comfortably to perform office work; field work requires moderate physical activity.

Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
