The Field Service Engineer Level 1 is an entry level field service position requiring a strong background in electronics and mechanics. The role emphasizes rapid learning through training (domestic and international) and on-the-job experience. It is a customer-facing role requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills, excellent time management, and the ability to work independently as training progresses. Responsibilities
Successfully complete all assigned technical training to acquire knowledge of assigned company equipment, including pre-reading, classroom courses, and passing courses to instructors’ satisfaction. Demonstrate in the field that classroom and on-the-job training concepts can be applied to a high standard. Learn and use administrative applications for service order management, spare parts/inventory management, time reporting, expense reporting, etc. Participate actively in on-the-job training; listen, take notes, ask questions, and assist as needed. Complete CONTact Training and apply its principles in practice. Assist other Field Service Engineers with service order and inventory tasks as requested by the Regional Field Service Manager. Under supervision, provide installation services and preventive and corrective maintenance for ZEISS Microscopy systems. Conduct site or system environmental analysis tests as assigned. Train customers on basic system operation and maintenance using established guidelines. Maintain ZEISS tools and assets responsibly. Engage in personal development using ZEISS CurioZ and related materials relevant to the role. Prioritize safety when visiting labs, with awareness of risks and lab behavior. Represent ZEISS values and agenda in interactions with internal and external customers. Other duties as assigned by the manager. Qualifications
4-year degree or technical certificate in a technical/scientific discipline, related military electronics experience, or an equivalent combination such as 3+ years direct experience with complex automated electromechanical systems. Knowledge of Laboratory Safety for BSL 1, 2, and 3 environments and handling of Level 3 (and below) pathogenic materials. Ability to troubleshoot software, electronics, optics/electron optics, high voltage, high vacuum, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems. Knowledge of Windows OS and basic office applications; ability to read electrical or mechanical engineering documentation and schematics. Proven ability to work well individually or as part of a team; good communication skills in English (German or French a plus). Good administrative and time management skills. Working Conditions and Special Demands
Ability to engage customers in their workspace, including BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities; may engage in BSL-4 environments if required. Travel domestically and internationally; may work on defined projects in addition to service duties; lifting up to ~75 lbs for equipment crates. Valid US driver’s license and ability to drive company-provided vehicle; frequent overnight travel (approximately 50%). Participation in six months to one year of formal Field Service Engineer training and ongoing duties. Benefits
