Overview

Substation Engineer III/IV is responsible for the design, review, and quality assurance of substation projects. The role includes both in-house engineering and collaboration with external engineering firms to ensure compliance with standards and successful project execution. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in substation design, with a strong commitment to safety, accuracy, and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities

Review and perform QA/QC on substation engineering designs including one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring drawings, and protection & control (P&C) documentation. Collaborate with external engineering firms, consultants, vendors, and equipment manufacturers. Develop standard substation designs including steel structures, foundations, grounding systems, oil containment, lightning protection, and layout drawings. Evaluate equipment specifications and project timelines to ensure timely and accurate procurement. Prepare bills of material and cost estimates to support project planning and budgeting. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to internal teams on standards, procedures, and specifications. Analyze feedback from construction and maintenance teams to improve designs and recommend alternatives. Review manufacturer drawings for compliance with company specifications. Develop and review relay settings for substation and transmission assets. Prepare and submit engineering permit applications as required. Ensure adherence to company design standards and recommend updates to align with industry best practices. Travel to job sites as needed; must be able to work in varying terrain and weather conditions. Participate in emergency response efforts, which may require availability 24/7. Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program. Minimum of 10 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a focus on substation design. FE certification strongly preferred; PE license is a plus. Proficiency in AutoCAD Substation Design Suite and Microsoft Office applications. Strong understanding of physical and P&C prints, site grading plans, and plan/profile drawings. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and conflict-resolution skills. Strong attention to detail and technical writing abilities. Commitment to safety and teamwork. Work Environment & Location

Primary office location: Fredericksburg, VA. Hybrid work arrangements available. Occasional travel required for training and site visits. Must be able to respond to outages or emergencies outside of regular working hours. Compensation

Base pay range: $115,000.00/yr - $165,000.00/yr
