Walgreens . The Pharmacy Manager Local Specialty provides pharmacy consulting services with empathy to patients regarding the effective usage of medications and awareness of drug interactions. This role is responsible for managing the operation of the pharmacy department and is accountable for workflow management, continuous quality improvement, adherence to policy and procedure, compliance with internal and external regulatory bodies, pharmacy sales, expense control and inventory management, and protecting department assets, while ensuring the highest level of patient service (including providers and pharmaceutical and payer partners). Responsibilities and scope include patient experience, operations, business performance management, business planning, people & performance management, training & personal development, and communications.

Responsibilities

Patient Experience: Ensure department personnel provide hospitable service and information to deliver a distinctive patient experience, including interpersonal habits that show care and Walgreens service traits. Respond to patient inquiries and complaints in a timely manner to ensure a positive patient experience.

Operations: Manage the operation of the pharmacy department; improve prescription numbers, pharmacy sales, profit, and image through accurate filling of prescriptions and courteous service to patients, prescribers, manufacturers, payers, and health systems. Report prescription errors and adhere to policies related to prescription incidents and quality improvement. Ensure inventory reporting for limited distribution drugs when required; comply with federal and state laws, maintain records, and implement asset protection controls. Maintain department housekeeping, adherence to government regulations, and safety. Oversee cash management including safe handling, cash accounts, and daily reports. Ensure proper operation and maintenance of systems and equipment. Manage third-party pharmacy business opportunities and minimize payment rejections. Manage and control Prescription Department inventory and staffing; coordinate daily schedule of activities and staffing to meet budgeting guidelines.

Business Performance Management: Prepare, submit, and file various reports required by the Company and government agencies.

Business Planning: Solicit third-party prescription business and pursue opportunities to grow Walgreens’ Specialty businesses at the site. For Health System locations, collaborate with internal strategic accounts to deepen relationships and grow business.

People & Performance Management: Implement department structure through hiring, placement, scheduling, delegation, promotion, and staffing decisions. Build employee morale, reward performance, address complaints, and ensure compliance with Constructive Discipline policies. Ensure EEO compliance and a harassment-free workplace. Allocate pharmacy hours and payroll, and supervise staff to ensure adherence to policies. Ensure licensure and ongoing training for all personnel, including payer and pharmaceutical contractual requirements.

Training & Personal Development: Develop department employees through orientation, training, and objective setting. Audit performance and set development standards; stay informed on developments in pharmacy, healthcare, and retail management.

Communications: Maintain relationships with physicians and health professionals; collaborate with internal teams to drive business growth; plan and administer community and professional relations programs; communicate plans and encourage feedback to increase productivity.

Basic Qualifications

BS in Pharmacy or PharmD from an accredited institution.

Current pharmacist license in the states within the district.

At least 1 year of pharmacy experience including prescription filling and verification, records and legal compliance, pharmacy operations, software, and insurance systems.

Experience with prescription dispensing and working knowledge of state and federal controlled substance laws.

Specialized training or practical experience in medication/disease states offered at the clinic location (e.g., HIV, Organ Transplant, Oncology).

Preferred Qualifications

Supervisory experience planning, organizing, and directing pharmacy staff, preferably at a local specialty pharmacy.

Average leadership rating of 3.7 or above on last performance review if available.

At least 6 months pharmacy experience with Walgreens Co.
