Overview

Surgical Technician is an integral member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures ranging from local anesthesia cases (biopsies and excision) to vascular and micro-vascular surgery, including ear, hand, facial, and vascular reconstruction. Must be prepared to adapt to new procedures in a changing surgical environment, participating with the surgical team in planning and implementing complex procedures under supervision of the surgical team. Responsibilities

Primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures (e.g., thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, total joint replacement). Set up sterile field with all required items for each procedure (air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other OR supplies). Plan and anticipate equipment needs, ensure functioning equipment and proper lighting. Ensure availability of all supplies and equipment prior to procedures; prepare, organize, and maintain complex sterile set-ups. Maintain sterility of the environment and access to emergency instruments and equipment. Scrub on complex procedures using strict aseptic techniques; assist in preparation, positioning, and draping of patients for safe intervention. Observe and respond to each stage of the procedure, anticipate surgeon needs, and recognize non-verbal signals. Hand instruments and equipment to the surgeon; follow universal precautions and infection control policies; handle specimens appropriately. Monitor the surgical site for adverse situations, perform sponge and instrument counts with the circulating RN, and maintain accountability for all instruments and equipment. Assist in training residents, medical students, nursing students, and OR staff in sterile technique and equipment handling. Assist with patient transport within the OR suite and recovery areas, ensuring safe handling and positioning. Assist in quality improvement activities and collaborate with OR RNs to develop educational programs. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Education and experience: Applicants must meet the Individual Occupation Requirement (IOR) for Health Aid and Technician Series (0640) and one of the following: specialized experience at GS-06 level or higher, or graduate education/certificate directly related to the work, or a combination of education and experience.
