Summary

Surgical Technician is an integral member of the surgical team and provides assistance to surgeons and other team members during surgical procedures, ranging from local anesthesia cases (biopsies and excisions) to vascular and microvascular surgeries, including ear, hand, facial, and vascular reconstruction. Must be prepared to adapt to new procedures in a changing surgical environment, participating in surgical team planning and implementing complex procedures under supervision. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of 09/02/2025. You may qualify based on experience and/or education as described below. Applicants must meet the Individual Occupational Requirement and the Specialized Experience/Education requirements, which are separate. The IOR for Health Aid and Technician Series (0640) includes support duties to various medical personnel. Technician experience involves applying knowledge, methods, and techniques related to the position. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade, including working in an operating room, assisting surgeons, setting up sterile fields, handling technical medical instruments, and operating sterilization equipment. Education:

One year of graduate education directly related to the position, or a combination of education and experience. Duties

Functions as the primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures such as thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, and joint replacements. Sets up sterile fields with all required items and ensures functioning equipment and proper lighting. Plans and discusses procedures with surgical staff, maintaining sterile environments and anticipating needs. Assists in patient preparation, positioning, and draping, and maintains high concentration during procedures. Proficiently hands instruments to surgeons, recognizes signals, and responds promptly. Follows infection control policies, handles specimens appropriately, and monitors for adverse situations. Performs sponge and instrument counts, manages surgical instruments and equipment, and assists in training staff and students. Lifts, moves, and transports patients safely, maintaining proper positioning and protection of wounds. Maintains and updates surgical equipment and supplies, assesses equipment needs, and participates in quality improvement activities. Works closely with OR staff to develop educational programs and performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Day shift with on-call and weekend requirements. This is not a virtual position.
