Cenovus is hiring a Process Safety Engineer for its Toledo, Ohio refinery. This role supports 24/7 operations, focusing on process safety across multiple units and driving risk reduction programs. The engineer will work with various organizational levels, including site leadership and Cenovus team members. Strong technical knowledge is required to innovate process risks and implement effective solutions. What you’ll do
Provide mentorship on Process Safety risk assessment and risk management processes, methods, and standards; leading safety risk across the site, mentoring others in risk management methodology, and ensuring OSHA PSM compliance. Lead compliance with OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA RMP 40 CFR 68. Coordinate key Process Safety metrics and provide leadership and innovative ways to deliver on safety performance using standard methodologies from other Cenovus facilities. Participate and/or facilitate risk reviews including MOC, HAZOP, LOPA, PSSR for plant changes, issues, and start‑ups. Understand and engage in a wide array of technical elements using influence across the plant to clearly and robustly identify risk and risk mitigations across the refinery, driving consistent and continuous risk reduction for the site. Educate site population on PSM requirements, good practices, new methods and hazard study outputs, and assist site employees in understanding major accident hazards (MAH) and barriers related to the MAH. Who you are
Legally authorized to work in the US. Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar fields. 2+ years of experience in process engineering, technical safety, operations, or process safety engineering in oil and gas or chemicals preferred. Knowledge of US regulations specifically the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Process Safety Management Standard (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA RMP Rule preferred. Process Safety Related Training (PHA/HAZOP/LOPA/MOC) and familiarity with MOC, PHA/HAZOP, LOPA, and major accident hazard (MAH) methodologies preferred. Shown experience leading/assisting HAZOPs, LOPAs, MOCs, and Incident Investigations preferred.
