The firm’s Public Infrastructure – Transportation Team is seeking a Design Professional – Civil to join the West Des Moines, IA office. We welcome applications from recent graduates and early-career professionals with up to three years of experience. Overview

As part of our Transportation and Municipal practice, you’ll gain hands-on experience in traffic engineering and municipal transportation projects, contributing to solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and mobility in the communities where we live and work. This role provides a solid foundation for your career and supports licensure through diverse project experience and mentorship. Responsibilities

Focus on traffic engineering, including traffic studies, signal design, corridor modeling, traffic operations analysis, and development of traffic control and detour plans. Contribute to broader transportation and infrastructure projects, supporting roadway design and multimodal initiatives. Prepare CAD drawings, traffic models, technical reports, construction documents, and cost estimates. Gain field experience through data collection, traffic counts, and construction observation to connect planning and design with real-world performance and implementation. Qualifications

Education: Graduated from an accredited engineering school. Experience: new graduate or early career Civil Engineer with 0-3 years of professional experience. License/Certification: Have passed or are scheduled to take fundamentals of engineering exam to obtain official Engineering Intern designation by the State of Iowa. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. AutoCAD Civil 3D experience is a plus. MicroStation 3D experience is a plus. Ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral. Demonstrates a service-oriented approach to clients and works effectively with multi-discipline teams. Strong time management and organizational skills with attention to detail. Internships/summer experience in civil engineering or construction is a plus. Preferred Qualifications

Strong interest in traffic engineering. Practical experience with MicroStation/OpenRoads Design & AutoCAD Civil 3D; knowledge of traffic modeling software is a plus. Effective communication skills and commitment to client service. Previous internships or summer experiences in traffic or transportation civil engineering are advantageous. Why Shive-Hattery?
