Overview The County of San Bernardino invites qualified applicants to apply for an engineering leadership opportunity as an Engineering Manager in the Department of Public Works (DPW). These positions are responsible for managing a functional engineering division through subordinates and supervising professional and technical engineering staff. Essential functions include planning, organizing, directing, and reviewing the work of engineers, planners, and technicians; receiving and reviewing plans for proposed improvements and land development projects; engaging in all phases of complex engineering studies and projects; preparing and administering the annual division budget; overseeing the preparation of special reports, studies, engineering drawings, plans, and other documents; and coordinating engineering projects with other County departments, divisions, governmental agencies, regulatory agencies, consultants, engineering firms, private organizations, and public utilities.

Responsibilities

Plan, organize, direct, and review the work of engineers, planners, and technicians.

Receive and review plans for proposed improvements and land development projects.

Engage in all phases of complex engineering studies and projects.

Prepare and administer the annual division budget.

Oversee the preparation of special reports, studies, engineering drawings, plans, and other documents.

Coordinate engineering projects with other County departments, divisions, governmental and regulatory agencies, consultants, engineering firms, private organizations, and public utilities.

Qualifications Licenses:

Current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, in addition to meeting one of the options below.

Option 1

— Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. AND Experience: One year of experience comparable to a Supervising Engineer, directing and supervising engineers, planners, technicians, and overseeing public works or building and safety related projects from planning through design and construction.

Option 2

— Education: Forty-five semester (68 quarter) units in civil engineering or a closely related field (candidates must provide a list of completed coursework). AND Experience: Three years of experience comparable to a Supervising Engineer, directing and supervising engineers, planners, technicians, and overseeing public works or building and safety related projects from planning through design and construction.

Note:

Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by a recognized accrediting association. Degrees outside the U.S. require a credential evaluation showing equivalency. A Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program is highly desirable.

Conditions of Employment

Background:

Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.

Travel:

Travel to various sites throughout the County and the State is required; a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire. Out-of-State travel is also required.

Physical:

Frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation; frequent reaching or working below shoulder level; near and far vision requirements; occasional lifting up to 10 pounds; exposure to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and temperature/humidity extremes; may require protective equipment.
