Full Time Position Summary

Performs clinic support in both the clinical and administrative areas. In the clinical area, under the direction and supervision of a licensed Nurse or Provider, and in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice, participates in the delivery of patient care. In the administrative area, gathers patient information for registration, schedules appointments, verifies demographic and financial information, and assists in facilitating patient flow throughout the ambulatory setting. Essential Responsibilities / Duties

Delivers care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is respectful to patients. Duties include:

Clinical Support:

Under the direction of the licensed Nurse or Provider, performs delegated patient care interventions for patients and their families.

Collaborates with the licensed Nurse/clinic manager as a member of the interdisciplinary team to determine work assignments and priorities; communicates task status and patient data findings.

Monitors patient flow, waits times, and informs nursing/technical staff of patient arrival.

Pre-visit chart review and preparations for upcoming visits, including identification and documentation of patient care needs based on clinic guidelines and protocols.

Enters orders for labs/tests for upcoming visits per clinic guidelines.

Greets patients, escorts to exam rooms, and uses appropriate medical terminology in documentation.

Assists with intake, including confirming identifiers, recording vital signs, history, allergies, medications, immunization records, and smoking status; prepares for provider encounter.

Obtains immunization records/history and enters findings into the medical record; informs patient on preparation for provider visits.

Sets up equipment and supplies for visits; conducts preventive/population health screening and records results.

Coordinates refills with provider approval; downloads device data for review; alerts provider to abnormalities.

Ensures complete and accurate patient records per documentation standards; updates pharmacy information.

Collects, labels, and may deliver specimens with appropriate requisitions; identifies emergency/crisis situations and initiates appropriate response actions within scope of role.

Maintains competence across various clinical skills (e.g., vitals, phlebotomy, EKGs, wound care, simple dressing changes, etc.).

Assists with minor procedures under nurse/provider direction; includes setup, draping, and post-procedure tasks.

Provides basic patient equipment care and helps complete patient visit with disposition forms and education materials.

Performs isolation procedures when directed by licensed personnel and maintains supply inventories.

Advanced Clinical Activities

The following examples illustrate tasks a Practice Assistant in a Specialty clinic may assist with or perform; some may require training or certifications:

Assist With:

Chronic wound treatment, MOHS surgery, excisional surgery, laser treatment, cosmetic procedures, urodynamic studies, and related procedures.

Perform:

Suture removals; phlebotomy.

Clerical Support Gathers and assists with registration information; ensures accurate data entry and updates in the computer system.

Verifies third-party insurance coverage and obtains approvals; handles billing system entries.

Collects payments, informs patients of financial obligations, and directs to financial assistance as needed.

Manages medical records requests, assigns medical record numbers, and maintains clinic files and patient records.

Uses computer systems to access and communicate patient information, lab results, and requests; stamps dates on charts and prepares clinic forms.

Handles clinic mail, notices, cross-booking, and reschedules appointments as needed.

Updates charge codes/diagnosis codes; tracks and arranges return of equipment; maintains equipment logs.

General Duties Delivers age-appropriate care to patient groups regularly served.

Opens to staff orientation and supports floating pool staff; adheres to hospital standards and patient rights; demonstrates RESPECT values.

Maintains confidentiality and participates in quality improvement and education activities; keeps required competencies and certifications up to date.

Advanced Administrative Duties Schedules urgent patients; completes advanced clinical billing batches; maintains special procedure lists.

Maintains special procedure areas, inventories, vendor relationships, and service needs; performs other duties as assigned.

Work Rules, Standards, And Competency Maintains professional appearance and hospital ID; adapts to changing patient and practice unit needs.

Coordinates breaks with the practice unit; works cooperatively with staff and seeks feedback for improvement.

Participates in staff meetings and ongoing education to maintain competency.

Education: Work requires a high school diploma or GED plus at least one of the following: successful completion of a medical assistant program or equivalent clinical experience. Equivalent combination of education and healthcare-related work experience. Experience: Requires at least two years of previous work experience; clinical setting experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Must pass clinical competency testing; strong communication, organizational, and computer skills; ability to maintain confidentiality; proficiency in medical terminology; ability to work independently and handle confidential information.
