Overview
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for ensuring technical compliance with unit policies for scientists, examiners, and technicians working within the Firearms and Toolmarks Unit. The manager serves as a liaison between the technical leader and the Laboratory Director, manages cases within the unit, and may act as Laboratory Director in the director’s absence. The role requires bias‑free performance and training oversight until competency is achieved. Responsibilities
Ensure technical compliance with unit and division policies and training requirements. Maintain case management for the Firearms and Toolmarks Unit. Act as liaison between technical leader and Laboratory Director. Serve as acting Laboratory Director when necessary. Oversee training of scientists and examiners until competency is achieved. Perform all duties in a bias‑free manner. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in forensic science, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, or a related pure or applied science. Two years of experience equivalent to a Forensic Scientist 12 or a State Police Specialist (Sergeant) or State Police Sergeant 12 in the State Police Forensic Science Division. For the Firearm specialty area, possession of a bachelor's degree in any major and two years of experience as a State Police Specialist (Sergeant) or State Police Sergeant 12 in the State Police Forensic Science Division may be substituted for the education and experience requirement. Pass pre‑employment screening, including drug screen, criminal history background check, and fingerprint check. Attach cover letter/memo, resume, and official college transcripts (if applicable) to application. Applicants must have previously taken and passed the State Police Lieutenants Examination (No. 2022) to be considered for positions in this classification. Applicants must be eligible for selection pursuant to Official Order 03‑41 – Impact of discipline or corrective action on selection eligibility. Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
