Overview At our Vetco Total Care Full Service Veterinary Hospitals, the veterinarian position is an immersive role focused on quality patient care and leadership within the hospital team. You will work with quality equipment and a supportive medical field leadership and paraprofessional team to expand skills in dentistry, nutrition and more.
Responsibilities
Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
Utilize a problem-based approach with complete problem lists, differentials, diagnostic plans, and appropriate treatments based on diagnostic results.
Document patient observations, exams, diagnostics, treatments, medications, client interactions, and diagnoses in the medical record concisely and accurately.
Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including spays/neuters, abdominal explorations, and mass removals.
Perform routine and complex dental procedures including examinations, radiographs interpretation, and extractions or oral surgeries.
Develop treatment plans for day hospital cases and transition patients to overnight care as needed; communicate with referral hospitals to ensure continuity of care.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at the start and end of shifts.
Disseminate knowledge to improve patient care and communication among staff and clients.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Nature of Supervision In all activities related to patient care, the Veterinarian will take direct supervision from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director. The Veterinarian should expect guidance based on electronic medical record review and should accept feedback to elevate patient care. All veterinarians should work together collegially and behave professionally.
Planning and Problem Solving Problem solving is central to veterinary medicine; candidates should possess strong problem-solving skills for expeditious diagnosis of patient problems.
Impact This position contributes to the growth of a productive practice while maintaining a high-quality standard of care, fostering a cohesive, well-trained, and motivated team, and promoting employee retention, patient well-being, and customer satisfaction.
Supervisory Responsibility This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but the Veterinarian is a de facto leader in the hospital.
Education/Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
Active licensure as a veterinarian without contingencies in the state of the hospital or ability to obtain by start date.
Current DEA license.
Current Controlled Substance License, if applicable, in the state of the hospital or ability to obtain by start date.
USDA Category I Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date.
Comfort performing anesthesia and routine surgeries including canine and feline spays/neuters, mass removals, and dentals.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a professional demeanor under stress.
Strong telephone and computer skills and a willingness to learn new techniques and adapt to change.
Work Environment The majority of duties are conducted in a Vetco Total Care veterinary full-service hospital. Requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods. Significant client and patient contact.
