Job Title: Staff Nurse - Intensive Care Unit Float Pool - Mount Sinai Hospital - Full Time - Nights Position overview: The Clinical Nurse for the Mount Sinai nursing float pool is a Registered Professional Nurse who provides safe, competent quality care based on nursing theory and research to a designated group of patients on a variety of assigned units. Responsibilities
Delivers patient care by applying the professional practice model of Relationship Centered Care and the nursing process based on theory, research, evidence-based practice, and approved organizational nursing standards. Assesses and evaluates patient care needs and applies critical thinking in patient care management. Integrates relevant assessment and intervention skills in the delivery of nursing care. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care. Prioritizes all aspects of patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and planning after hospital care; delegates to others as appropriate. Educates patients and caregivers about their plan of care, transition of care, health promotion, and disease prevention. Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, family and all members of the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team. Manages assignments within the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing and allocates materials resources effectively. Patient Experience
Models the tenets of Mount Sinai Relationship Centered Care through actions such as Admission Welcome, Bedside shift Report, HELP, AM/PM Care, 5 Minute Sit Down, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Medication Review, Discharge Wrap Up, and MD/RN Unit Collaboration. Considers patients’ values, preferences, needs and knowledge in all aspects of care. Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patient and family. Uses evidence-based practices to understand patients’ perceptions of care. Initiates service recovery for concerns and escalates as needed. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening. Supports staff use of evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care. Conducts Purposeful Hourly Rounding addressing the four Ps. Quality and Safety
Practices safe, patient-centered care and escalates barriers and opportunities for improvement. Demonstrates clinical skills crucial to quality and safety in the patient population served. Implements process improvement strategies based on institutional evidence-based procedures. Engages in peer and institutional review processes. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to create and implement quality improvement projects and nursing research. Contributes to quality and safety practices and compliance measures. Implements high-reliability principles to identify and avoid high-risk behaviors. Escalates potential safety hazards following the institutional chain of command. Documents nursing practice in IT systems to support quality and performance improvement initiatives. Operations
Performs charge nurse duties as assigned. Coordinates supplies and inventory to ensure patient care needs are met. Escalates material or staffing deficits to appropriate leadership. Adopts patient-focused and cost-effective approaches to care regarding equipment, staff, and supplies. Documents accurately and in compliance with hospital, regulatory and legal requirements and standards of care. Facilitates patient throughput on a shift basis. Professional Development
Supports clinical colleagues, patients and families and contributes to the environment of care. Advances clinical competence from novice to expert. Maintains a professional image and demonstrates cared-for communication with respect and empathy. Incorporates ethical principles into decision making for patient and family. Participates in shared decision making through councils, committees and unit initiatives. Serves as a professional role model and preceptor for new staff and students. Education Requirements Graduation from an accredited nursing program. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. An ADN RN may be acceptable if matriculated in a BSN program with a graduation date within the year or if approved by the CNO. Experience Requirements Relevant clinical competence in the assigned nursing practice; new graduates must possess current knowledge of the nursing process and its application. Licensing and Certification Requirements Licensed as a registered nurse with current New York State registration; Basic Life Support (BLS) from AHA; NRP (Labor and Delivery, NICU); ACLS (various units); PALS (ED, PACU, IR, pediatrics and related depts).
