Key Responsibilities

Set up sterile field and gather supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used.

Pass instruments to surgeons during surgical procedures.

Perform count procedures per policy during surgical cases.

Function under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Requirements

Licensure, Certification, or Registration for Hire:

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), or Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (CORST) preferred.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration for Continued Employment:

Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Certification.

Must achieve CST, TS-C, or CORST certification within 24 months of hire.

Experience

0-2 years of experience as a surgical technologist required.

Experience working in an acute care setting as a nursing assistant or aide (if no surgical technologist experience).

Education/Training

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program, military training program, Licensed Practical Nursing Program, or Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program (RN Interns Only).

Additional position details

Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with the employee’s Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. Schedules may be adjusted to meet staffing requirements.

Takes call for routine cases after completing probationary period.

Physical requirements include lifting 50-100 lbs and daily activities such as standing, walking, bending, and exposure to potentially hazardous substances.

Independent action required: Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing indirect patient care, emotional support and problem solving, per unit policies.

May involve handling, transportation, access to, and contact with medications and related supplies.
