Responsibilities
The Endoscopy Registered Nurse (RN) manages a variety of complex patient populations by utilizing methodical and evidence-based practice standards, maintaining physiological and behavioral function, and providing psychological and sociological support to the patient and family during the recovery process. Priority is toward improvement and/or maintenance of the patient’s pre-procedural state.
Consistently translates scientific knowledge into nursing care using the nursing process.
Formulates care plans for direct and indirect care; performs essential nursing actions and skills.
Explains health treatments and teaches patients and families.
Adheres to universal patient safety goals (e.g., Universal Protocol).
Completes a thorough pre-op assessment; coordinates patient flow and prioritizes nursing activities according to patient needs and the Endoscopy schedule.
Uses pre-op equipment appropriately (I-stat, Accu-Check, computer); documents and ensures quality control and equipment care.
Conducts post-op follow-up calls within 24-48 hours of surgery and takes corrective action as needed.
Performs hand-off communication to all staff regarding patient care.
Provides appropriate care to all patients undergoing anesthesia (general, MAC, Moderate sedation).
Discharges patients by defined criteria (Stage I & II).
Delegates tasks based on scope of practice, preparation, and capability.
Evaluates effectiveness of care and modifies plans as needed; observes and interprets outcomes.
Advocates for patients and initiates action to advance the plan of care.
Supports change decisions and participates in professional practice development (committees, research, policy development/review, unit improvement projects).
Maintains knowledge of current policies; shares awareness of new trends/technology.
Provides appropriate age-specific care and uses the nursing process (data collection, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation, and patient teaching) to manage the patient’s condition.
Collaborates with physicians, co-workers, and other staff to provide circulating or technical assistance during Endoscopy procedures.
Performs GI diagnostic testing as assigned and participates in performance improvement and quality control activities.
Supports orientation, training, and continuing education for staff.
Follows governing regulations and policies (e.g., hospital policies, Title 22, JCAHO) and adheres to Moderate Sedation procedures.
Performs on-call duties on rotation.
Required Qualifications
BSN (Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing) or grandfathered BSN if hired prior to 12/2019.
1 year of prior GI lab experience or one year in a high-acuity ICU setting prior to application.
Excellent communication skills in English (reading, writing, speaking).
Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, ability to perform duties including venipuncture and associated procedures per policies and procedures.
Commitment to excellence in patient care and customer service; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
Moderate Sedation administration experience (preferred).
Required Licenses/Certifications
Registered Nurse (CA Board of Registered Nursing).
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, American Heart Association.
Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); must be obtained within 30 days of hire and renewed as required (LA City only).
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association.
Salary: The hourly rate range for this position is $44.00 - $95.00. USC considers factors such as scope and responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market considerations when extending offers.
