SANE Position Summary: The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a forensic nurse who provides specialized care for patients who are victims of sexual assault. Forensic nurses are nurses first and foremost. However, the specialized role of forensic nurses goes far beyond medical care; forensic nurses also have a specialized knowledge of the legal system and skills in injury identification, evaluation and documentation. After attending to the patient’s immediate medical needs, a forensic nurse often collects evidence, provides medical testimony in court, consults with legal authorities, and provides crisis intervention and the highest level of patient care. The position includes daytime office hours as well as on-call hours during the week and some weekends. 1. Competitive wages for daytime/office nursing position. 2. Additional pay for on-call hours and patient exams. Call pay $6.25 per hr for non-business hours and $9.37 per hr for Holidays. 3. Minimal weekends and Holidays 4. Debt free education for SANE didactic, clinicals and certifications. Essential Functions of Clinic Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner: 1. Follows policies, procedures, and protocols set forth by the SATC. 2. Maintains current on information pertaining to forensic nursing/sexual assault. 3. Demonstrates advanced forensic clinical assessment, documentation and analytical skills. Maintains a perceptual certainty that influences clinical judgment and ability. Engages in autonomous, critical decision making and intervention based on nursing process, intuitive practice, and a holistic approach. 4. Adheres to clinic responsibilities on scheduled clinic days. 5. Serves as an expert witness as required by subpoena. Provides expert testimony and acts as a resource for defense and prosecution as appropriate. 6. Maintains a professional rapport with all team members of the SATC and other disciplines involved in the care of the patient. 7. Ensures confidentiality of all individuals in contact with the SATC at all times. 8. Must commit to cover a minimum number of call shifts as determined by SANE coordinator. 9. When on call, arrive at facility and initiate patient care within 60 minutes of initial call. 10. Must have a current driver’s license, reliable transportation and phone access. Education Requirements: · Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Experience Requirements: · Minimum one year of critical care, public health, OB/GYN, or pediatric nursing. · Previous experience with sexual assault patients preferred. Certificates, Licenses & Registrations: · Registered Nurse with current Indiana license. · SANE-A Certification (5 years from date of hire). · SANE-P Certification (7 years from date of hire). · Credentialing as an allied health provider with local hospitals. · Maintain professional memberships with IAFN and the Indiana chapter of IAFN. Skills: 1. Ability to organize, communicate both in written and verbal forms, use critical thinking and complex decision making, and problem solve. 2. Interprets and implements standards of practice including ANA’s Standards of Clinical Nursing. 3. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, policy-making bodies, strategic partners, contractual partners and members of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). 4. Ability to function in an environment that is highly emotional and psychological stress. Environmental/Working Conditions: Work in an office environment with evening/night and weekend work/call responsibilities. Respond to local hospitals as needed to provide direct clinical care to sexual assault patients. May be required to work fundraising and educational events after hours. Physical/Mental Demands: Requires concentrated, complex and variable mental effort with emphasis on written/verbal communication skills and processing pertinent information. Requires sitting and standing associated with normal office environmental setting. Requires occasional lifting up to forty pounds and movement of office equipment and supplies.
