PetSmart’s Store Leader has leadership oversight of safety of people and pets, pet parent experience, operational execution, financial outcomes, and HR functions within all areas of the store. This role provides exemplary leadership for the store by driving company culture and strategies, achieving targeted results, championing exceptional pet parent service and efficient execution of the store’s daily business while upholding the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy. Essential Responsibilities
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, and may vary by store characteristics and needs: People Leadership
Responsible for employment decisions such as recruiting, interviewing, hiring, coaching, and terminating. Builds an open-door culture in the store by engaging and listening to associates. Leverages the Voice of Associate tool to listen to feedback. Creates and posts the store schedule after input from Experience and Process Leader. Supports associate development, including reviews, recognition, training, onboarding, mentoring, and succession planning. Delegates effectively, empowers others, and fosters ownership for results. Communicates priorities to associates and adjusts as needed to meet goals. Ensures alignment with changing environment; addresses associate complaints and grievances; recognizes engagement. Ensures all associate reviews are delivered on time. Overall Store Experience
Leads the associate and pet parent experience; ensures pets in care are safe and healthy. Manages pet parent experiences over the phone, in person, or online; responds to concerns. Creates a store environment focused on delivering exceptional in-store experiences for pets and people. Evaluates operations and seeks opportunities to improve processes and services. Collaborates with Store Leadership on in-store and community events, including local adoption partnerships. Maintains store standards and a culture of policy and ethics compliance. Conducts monthly Core and Services Walks to verify policy execution. Maintains a safe environment for associates, pets, and pet parents; manages inventory levels; communicates business and financial objectives to leaders and associates. Reviews in-store cameras to assess safety, behavior, and risk; coaches leaders as needed. Takes action when a sick/injured pet is identified and coordinates veterinary care as needed. Supports opening and closing procedures to uphold brand promise. Business Management
Delivers corporate strategy and profitability goals by executing leadership direction. Analyzes reports, identifies root causes, and implements improvement plans; communicates results to leaders and staff. Drives opportunities to grow the business; holds associates accountable for store P&L targets. Manages expenses such as labor and supplies; coordinates with home office for requests and allocations. Creates and posts store schedules; processes payroll weekly within budget. Runs daily, weekly, and monthly reporting; handles related administrative tasks; runs store-related errands as needed. Qualifications
4-6 years of retail leadership or experience in a customer-focused environment. Full time availability; flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Proficiency in computer applications. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to react under pressure and maintain composure. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Supervisory Responsibility
Typically oversees the Experience Leader and Process Leader, up to six lead associates and ten to seventy non-leader associates, following PetSmart policies and procedures. Physical Demands and Work Environment
Stand, walk, climb a ladder, handle objects, and perform tasks requiring fine motor skills. May require lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and more than 100 pounds with assistance. Exposure to moving parts, pet hair, and variable noise; live animals handling is common; reasonable accommodations available. Do What You Love
