FY26: Teacher, Special Education (Learning for Independence), Grades 2/3, Farmland Elementary School, 1.0 FTE. Base pay range
$64,591.00/yr - $131,472.00/yr Summary Description
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Physical Demands: As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. Special Requirements: Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions. Job Specific Information
This is a full-time position for a Learning for Independence, self-contained classroom for grades 2-3. The wage range for this position is a salary between $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience. Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support. Works well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians. Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS). Education, Training & Experience Bachelor's degree in special education. Knowledge in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered. Certification: Meets Maryland State Department of Education SPC I in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable. Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or equivalent. • Certification in Special Education (SPC I) or eligibility for SPC I. • Experience with IEP development, data collection, and FAST/SSS/other assessment practices. • Strong knowledge of MCPS curricula and TPGS standards. • Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues. • Ability to provide instructional support and adapt materials for diverse learners.
