BRCC is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor in the Academic & Student Affairs department, Financial Aid sub department, in Baton Rouge, LA.
Duties and Responsibilities
60% of time: Advise and counsel students and families on the financial aid process, unique circumstances for individual applicants, and funding options; respond to inquiries via incoming telephone calls, letters, and emails. Evaluate and review financial aid awards, process documents, and respond to student requests. Make independent adjustments to a student’s financial aid profile within federal and state regulations using professional judgment. Maintain current knowledge of federal and state aid regulations as they relate to duties and institutional goals and objectives regarding financial aid. Interpret and modify financial aid packages consisting of private, institutional, state and federal funds. Cross-train with other staff as backup; rotate with other personnel to handle on-demand/walk-in student aid advising. Participate in college night and community events to present financial aid information. 35% of time: determined by department needs. 5%: other duties as assigned. Required Education
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Education, Computer Science, Social Science or related field. Required Experience
Strong customer service orientation and excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills. Ability to work individually as well as part of a team. Knowledge and experience in using a large database system. Ability to process and maintain information that is often ambiguous and highly confidential; understand and adhere to procedural and confidentiality requirements. Promotes a positive image of the Financial Aid Office by making group presentations explaining financial aid programs and application processes. Ensure student and parent awareness of various financial aid sources during counseling sessions and provide information and answers regarding sources. Preferred Education
Previous experience in a financial aid office or postsecondary institution preferred. Experience with Performing daily FA processes using Banner 9; familiar with federal, state, and institutional programs and requirements for administering each program. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of federal financial aid programs and supporting regulations; knowledge of Title IV program fund regulations and U.S. Department of Education rules and regulations. Benefits
