This position serves as a Medical Provider in our Public Health Clinic on a part-time basis, not to exceed 20 hours/week. Medical provider duties performed include but are not restricted to: promotion and maintenance of health; prevention of illness and disability; diagnosing, treating and managing acute and chronic illnesses; guidance and counseling for both individuals and families; prescribing, administering and dispensing therapeutic measures, tests, procedures and drugs; planning for situations beyond the nurse practitioner's expertise, and consulting with and referring to other health care providers as appropriate; and evaluating health outcomes. Employees obtain a thorough patient history and physical examination, perform appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, develop and maintain health care and therapeutic plans, and counsel patients. Approval to practice medical acts includes giving a medical diagnosis, ordering therapy, and prescribing medications outlined in the formulary. These employees are practicing with physician supervision who is ultimately responsible for the employees' medical practice; supervision from the physician includes a set of mutually agreed to patient care protocols and medical guidelines with the physician immediately available by telephone or physically, if needed, for consultation. The employee always functions under the supervision of a primary or back-up physician. An employee at this level will have a broader medical background and will function in a variety of settings. In addition, the employee functions under the direction of non-medical personnel while performing non-medical acts. Certifications/Trainings: Valid Medical CPR/AED within 90 days of hire Family Planning Title X Trainings Current DEA Certificate Required License: Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board and certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national credentialing body Experience: Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in NC; One year of experience as a Physician Extender Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as they relate to the area of work; thorough knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings, and therapeutic procedures as relate to the area of work; thorough knowledge and ability to plan a regime of care based on assessment and findings; considerable knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral methods. Skills in performing clinical functions. Ability to examine patients and detect abnormalities; ability to record accurately and completely all information necessary to evaluate and plan care and to convey this to the physician if indicated; ability to communicate orally; ability to teach and counsel individuals, families and groups in areas of health maintenance, preventive medicine, and care of the sick; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and to gain the confidence of patients and families and work effectively with them; ability to plan and conduct in-service training programs. Computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information. Considerable knowledge of professional nursing theory and techniques. General knowledge of local, state and federal regulations governing health care practices and of standards of accrediting bodies. General knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed.
