Position Overview
The University of Kansas Police Officer is a commissioned law enforcement position with full authority under applicable law. Officers perform duties in accordance with departmental rules and regulations, state laws, city ordinances, law enforcement codes of ethics, the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, and general principles of law enforcement and police work. Qualified officers are required to complete training at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Officers conduct criminal investigations, perform searches and seizures, arrest offenders, present criminal cases to prosecutors for prosecution in district and municipal courts, respond to medical and other emergencies, issue moving traffic violations, and assist other local law enforcement agencies. Officers receive a 1% pay raise after the first full pay period following the completion of probation and may be promoted within the department. The KU Police Department offers benefits including up to 176 hours of paid vacation per year, 96 hours of sick leave earned per year, nine paid holidays plus one discretionary day, a retirement program, medical and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, other benefit plan options, and State of Kansas discounts. Tuition assistance offers up to 12 credit hours per year and the Employee Dependent Tuition Assistance Scholarship (EDTAS) award opportunities. The department supports a climate of continuous learning and growth and fosters a culture of care where each person is seen, heard, and valued. Responsibilities
Patrol assigned areas on foot or by vehicle, responding to signs of trouble and initiating appropriate action. Investigate, testify in court, and confer with other law enforcement agencies, collecting and verifying information from interviews. Direct and control traffic flow and pedestrian movement, enforce traffic ordinances, and issue traffic citations for moving violations. Compose written reports in compliance with department procedures, maintain evidence, and manage lost and found property. Apprehend and/or arrest violators, exercising care to ensure legal and constitutional soundness. Respond to emergency situations, rendering aid and assistance to citizens and motorists. Establish and maintain professional contact with university employees, residents, and others to obtain cooperation and favorable attitude in maintaining order and effective police protection. Develop skills in the use of all equipment, maintain safe care and control of authorized equipment and vehicles. Maintain relationships with local community resource groups and maintain good relations with other law enforcement agencies. Maintain annual law enforcement officer certification(s) as required by state statute, qualify with duty weapons per department policy, attend all required departmental training, keep current on all legal changes, and comply with all laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. Carry out required and appropriate duties when assigned, often with short notice and could involve adverse weather conditions and extended hours. Position Requirements
Must be 21 years of age within three months of hire. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain an unrestricted Kansas driver's license (corrected vision acceptable). Must be free of convictions, expunged convictions, and diversions for any misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence or their equivalent under the uniform code of military justice imposed by any state or federal government (KSA 74-5605). Must be free of convictions, expunged convictions, and diversions for any crimes which are a felony or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice imposed by any state or federal government (KSA 74-5605). Must submit to and successfully complete a police officer selection test, physical and psychological testing, and drug screen. Must be in compliance with the University of Kansas Police Department Policy 204, Personal Equipment, Apparel, Appearance and Grooming. Must submit to a detailed background investigation. Must qualify biannually with duty weapon. Must be able to perform all the essential job functions and not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others. Maintain excellent physical condition. Required Qualifications
High school diploma or completion of a G.E.D. equivalency. Certified or ability to be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Preferred Qualifications
Commissioned law enforcement experience as a certified police officer. Significant progress toward or achievement of an associate's degree or higher in administration of justice, criminal justice, or a closely related field. Additional Candidate Instructions
