Overview Police Officer at City of Wellington, KS.

Position Summary Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, Captain, and/or Sergeant, the Police Officer performs duties in the protection of life and property and the preservation of order in the City of Wellington. The main responsibilities include enforcing federal, state and local laws, enforcing traffic laws, investigating crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance.

Essential Functions

Enforces federal, state and local laws, statutes and/or ordinances.

Conducts traffic and criminal investigations.

Investigates and intervenes in domestic disputes.

Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints.

Completes all necessary official forms and reports as required.

Searches for, collects, and identifies evidence found at crime scenes.

Appears and testifies in court proceedings.

Serves civil and criminal process and warrants.

Apprehends and arrests violators in a safe and constitutional method.

Directs traffic and issues citations for traffic law violations.

Operates a patrol vehicle routinely patrolling the city, assisting citizens with personal, family and social problems, providing police escorts when necessary.

Answers citizen complaints and takes necessary corrective action.

Alerts citizens of hazardous and dangerous conditions.

Informs the public on laws and general information.

Works with other law enforcement and emergency service agencies as required.

Responsibilities

Enforce laws and ordinances and conduct investigations.

Respond to emergency calls and enforce traffic laws.

Provide public assistance and community outreach.

Maintain accurate records and reports.

Participate in training and professional development.

Qualifications

Must be a United States citizen.

Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire.

High School diploma or GED.

Must be free of any physical or mental condition that would prevent performing essential functions.

Must be of good moral character and have no disqualifying criminal history.

Must have a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Ability to read, speak and write English fluently.

Requirements

Minimum one year of law enforcement experience preferred.

Must obtain and maintain a Police Officer Certification and complete 40 hours of continuing education annually.

Must satisfy all KSA 74-5605 requirements.

Experience One year of law enforcement experience preferred. The employee is expected to acquire the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months.

Education/Licenses High school diploma or GED. Some college is preferred. Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license and meet KSA 74-5605 requirements.

Technical Skills Knowledge of federal, state and local laws; law enforcement techniques; communication skills (written and oral); proficiency in operating communications equipment, weapons, and other law enforcement equipment; ability to use computers for information and reporting.

Problem Solving & Decision Making Frequent problem solving and decision making involving civil disputes, victim trauma, evidence collection, and force application.

Supervision Work may be performed independently of direct supervision according to established procedures.
