General Summary

Under the supervision of a superior officer, the Security Officer serves as an unsworn security officer in high-rise locations; performs a variety of general and specific security functions in order to preserve and protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, prevent and detect crime on CMHA premises, and perform emergency functions. May be armed or unarmed. Involves an element of personal risk. No supervisory responsibilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Monitors activity at CMHA high-rise locations, their immediate vicinity, and other designated areas to maintain leaseholder and building security, prevent crime or disturbance of the peace, and apprehend violators. Makes police presence visible to deter crime. Observes, inspects, and reports the condition of grounds, offices, floors, common areas, and other CMHA property. Maintains ongoing radio contact with superiors as directed; reports any suspicious criminal activity for a police response or instructions to take necessary actions. Responds to and handles lockouts, emergencies, and other on-site problems. Writes required reports; completes forms describing circumstances of crimes, accidents, investigations, complaints, and other security activities. May serve as commissioned (by the City of Cleveland) or non-commissioned officer and be compensated for the appropriate status in accord with the bargaining unit agreement. Commissioned officers may arrest misdemeanor offenders and detain suspects for felony offenses. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Two to three years experience in basic maintenance tasks. Skills Ability to read and write the English language, communicate effectively, and interact well with the public. Ability to work any shift and when called in for emergencies. Ability to complete CPR and first aid certification requirements. Ability to analyze situations rapidly and objectively, and determine proper courses of action. Skill in handling vehicles in both normal and emergency conditions. Physical agility. A minimum of 120 hours of specified training. Training Certification by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council. Passage of physical and psychological examinations and requirements. Passage of a drug screening test. Clean criminal record. Reliable transportation to CMHA. Possession of a personal home telephone. Possession of a personal firearm that meets established guidelines, where required for duty. Possession of a valid Ohio vehicle operator’s license (check for CDL substitute) with no more than three points, and insurability under Agency policies.
