Overview
The primary duty of this position is the supervision of Meat Inspectors in the Southeastern MT district. The supervisor is responsible for assessing employee performance, managing employee work schedules, and responding to employee questions and concerns. The supervisor conducts in-plant reviews of facilities to assess both employee function and establishment compliance with pertinent state and federal regulations. This position is responsible for responding to establishment appeals of regulatory actions when those appeals are moved up the agency chain of command. The supervisor also provides relief inspection service as needed. The supervisor works closely with the EIAO and Bureau Chief regarding implementation of Meat Inspection policies and procedures to maintain the meat inspection program standard of "at least equal to" the USDA FSIS federal inspection program. As a supervisor of the Department, this position will play a critical role in providing leadership guidance and support to the team. This position is expected to lead by example in order to cultivate a culture of collaboration, respect, and professionalism, all of which will enhance team morale and provide quality service to the people of the State of Montana. Responsibilities
Supervise Meat Inspectors in the Southeastern Montana district. Assess employee performance and manage work schedules. Respond to employee questions and concerns. Conduct in-plant reviews to assess employee function and establishment compliance with state and federal regulations. Respond to establishment appeals of regulatory actions when moved up the agency chain of command. Provide relief inspection service as needed. Collaborate with the EIAO and Bureau Chief on Meat Inspection policies and procedures. Lead by example to foster a culture of collaboration, respect, and professionalism. Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. 2-3 years’ experience in the meat industry or another food safety profession. At least 1 year of supervisory or leadership experience preferred. An associate degree in food science or a related field preferred. Conditions of Employment
Completion of the federal course titled “Inspection Methods” within 1 year of hire. Must live within the district assigned; Miles City is preferred, with consideration for applicants within a 30-mile range from Billings, Moore, or Glendive, MT on a case-by-case basis. Background check: employment is conditional upon a fingerprint background investigation. Ability to operate and legally drive a motor vehicle. Must be credentialed through USDA for access to FSIS systems and email accounts; Montana Meat & Poultry Inspection Bureau employees must meet requirements to access the Public Health Information System. Location and Travel
Location requirements: must live within the assigned district (Miles City preferred; 30-mile range from Billings, Moore, or Glendive considered). Field position with remote work and up to 40,000 miles of travel per year; overnight travel may be required. Majority of work performed at locations other than department-owned facilities. Salary
