– The Salvation Army Southern California Overview The Retail Associate is responsible for handling cash, operating cash registers, and assisting the public with donations and purchases in a Thrift Store environment. Duties include pricing, stocking, keeping the store and donation area clean, and performing basic janitorial tasks to maintain a safe working condition. Responsibilities Maintain cash register operations, process sales, issue credit slips, and handle monetary transactions accurately. Answer telephone inquiries and resolve customer complaints regarding merchandise. Provide excellent customer relations by offering prompt and courteous assistance to customers and donors. Ensure all merchandise is properly priced and displayed; stock, sort, price, and merchandise items; discard non-usable items. Price and prepare merchandise for placement on the sales floor; inspect and condition donated materials while rejecting unacceptable items. Sanitize furniture and domestics as required; assist with the loss prevention program and report incidents as needed. Maintain store and donation area cleanliness and safety; handle and sort donated materials, securing donation areas, trailers, and trash areas. Assist with inventory control and basic merchandising tasks; assess condition and value of goods quickly and accurately. Attend staff meetings, follow new policies, and adapt to directives; perform any other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent Previous experience in a warehouse or retail environment preferred Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision Knowledge of inventory control, retail sales, and loss prevention Ability to operate a cash register, credit card machines, and handle monetary transactions Strong customer service skills and ability to interact with the public and donors Proficiency with computer systems and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with POS and time clock systems Strong reading, writing, and mathematical skills Knowledge of merchandise pricing Ability to work and interact effectively with the public, co-workers, and volunteers Essential Job Functions Operate cash register, process sales, issue credit slips, handle refunds/voids Respond to telephone inquiries and resolve customer issues Ensure merchandise is properly priced and displayed; stock and merchandise items Assist in merchandising and pricing; prepare items for the sales floor Accept donated materials and courteously reject unacceptable items Sanitize and maintain cleanliness of store and merchandise Attend staff meetings and stay informed on policies Assist with loss prevention and report any incidents Maintain safety of the store and donation areas; help manage cleanliness inside and out Handle and sort donated materials; ensure security of donation areas and trailers Assess the condition and value of goods; maintain a clean and safe work area Perform other related duties as assigned Work Environment Work is performed inside and outside the store and warehouse. Exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions. Noise level is generally low to medium. Hearing protection may be worn around operating machinery. No hazardous waste, paints, cleaners, stains, poisons, batteries, or oils are allowed in the work environment. Physical Demands Speaking, sitting, bending, walking, pushing, pulling, standing, kneeling, stooping, reaching, handling, fingering, climbing, balancing. Ability to grasp, push, pull, and move objects; reach overhead; lift up to 50 lbs. May require using proper lifting techniques and back support.
