Job Summary The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for presenting a positive and competent image of the Old Colony Y through quality fitness programs designed to meet the needs of the community. Well prepared, relevant, safe, and effective programming will be taught in a professional manner, resulting in friendly, convenient, and courteous service. The instructor will create and implement high-level fitness routines combining current trends with established choreography to ensure a safe, healthy, and constructive environment for all participants.
Job Functions
Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and recognized Group Fitness certifications.
Compile program records including attendance, questionnaires, evaluations, and incident reports.
Assist with promotional activities such as open houses, demonstrations, and health fairs.
Be prepared to teach new routines at the start of each session.
Ensure a safe and healthy environment for exercise.
Arrive early to greet participants and address questions.
Dress appropriately and be well-prepared with music and routines.
Learn participants' names and share educational information.
Teach with energy and enthusiasm, motivating participants.
Help new participants feel comfortable.
Stay updated on safety and fitness trends.
Find substitutes if unable to teach and record it properly.
Exceed member expectations by going the extra mile.
Handle complaints effectively and promptly.
Enforce fitness class rules.
Maintain accurate attendance records and ensure proper registration and payment.
Maintain a clean, safe class environment and inspect equipment weekly.
Participate in inter-divisional activities and contribute positively to the work environment.
Participate in annual campaigns like Strong Kids.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum 18 years of age
High School Diploma or equivalent
Current CPR, First Aid, and recognized Group Fitness certifications
Attend YMCA Health and Fitness Workshops when available
Be timely, organized, and prepared to teach classes
Be in excellent physical condition, able to lift up to 45 pounds
Ability to develop routines and think independently
Maintain confidentiality and practice discernment
Flexible with schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Practical experience or YMCA Exercise Instructor I certification
Certification through ACE, ACSM, or similar within one year of hire
Be alert to signs of exercise distress
Adequate vision and hearing to interact and review documents
