The
Office for Disability Equity
invites applications for a
Sign Language Interpreter II
to provide sign language interpreting services to students, faculty, staff and visitors of UM.
Voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpretation of all courses, lectures, tutor sessions, labs, meetings, special events and community outreach.
Follow current trends in American Sign Language.
Adapt interpreting methods when necessary.
Engage in professional development.
Support the University’s inclusive prosperity mission.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in ASL-English Interpreting or relevant field. An equivalent combination of education and experience, including a 4.0+ EIPA score may be considered.
Fluency in ASL & English.
RID or BEI certification.
Demonstrated ability to apply and analyze the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in American Sign Language, voice-to-sign, and sign-to-voice interpretation.
The ability to interpret effectively, accurately and impartially both receptively and expressively, using any necessary specialized vocabulary.
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to effectively apply standardized interpretation procedures.
Demonstrated interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including ability to work with diverse group of individuals.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
Ability to maintain American Sign Language currency; ability to adapt interpreting methods when necessary.
Organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills and ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment with attention to detail.
Demonstrated skill in the operation of personal computers and word processing software with the ability to learn other software programs; assist with postproduction captioning process.
Knowledge of or the ability to learn The University of Montana policies and procedures.
Ability to perform duties while sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time; performs repetitive hand motions.
Preferred Qualifications
Five‑years’ experience working in a post‑secondary and/or community settings.
Completion of an interpreter training program; preference given to Bachelor's degree in ASL-English interpretation or related field.
Adherence to follow the NAD‑RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Preference given to candidates with RID certification and/or BEI certification and/or EIPA score 4.0 or higher.

Work Schedule:
Full‑time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year
Probationary Period:
Six (6) months minimum
Benefits Include:
Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
