A BSO application demonstrating the following must be completed and submitted to Human Resources by the listed closing date: Currently a Broward Sheriff's Office employee classified as a Detention Deputy in the Department of Detention. Successful completion of probationary period. Three (3) years of full-time paid experience as a BSO Detention Deputy in the Department of Detention. If you are applying for Veterans' Preference, please submit your DD-214 Member 4 or Service form by the listed closing date to be considered for preference points. Examination Description
The promotional process will consist of two testing components: a multiple-choice written exam and assessment exercises. The first component will be a written exam which will be based upon material outlined on the Reading List. Candidates who correctly answer 75% or more of the questions on the written exam will be invited to participate in the second component of the process, which will consist of assessment exercises. An invitation to an orientation session will also be sent to the candidates who pass the written exam; however, attendance is optional. Candidates who obtain at least a 75% in the assessment exercises will be placed on the eligibility list. Candidates must successfully pass both components of the promotional process to be placed on the eligibility list. The written exam will comprise 50% of the final score and the assessment exercises will comprise 50% of the final score. Portions of the promotional process may be videotaped for scoring purposes and candidate feedback. The expected duration of the promotional process could last 6-8 weeks from the written test date. This is supervisory work maintaining order and discipline among inmates in the Broward County Sheriff\'s Office Department of Detention. Work involves supervising deputies and subordinate personnel involving in the control of inmates; the enforcement of security rules, regulations and procedures; and the provision of services and information to inmates. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a superior but exercise independent judgment in completing the work assignments. Work is reviewed through observation, reports and conferences. Essential functions
are representative of the tasks performed within this classification and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position. Supervise the work of deputies and subordinate personnel involved in correctional activities including security, contraband control, sanitation, laundry, provision of medical, food, religious and recreational activities, visitation and related functions. Process inmates (receipt, booking, attorney and bondsman contacts, prisoner release, food delivery, cell assignment, security of operations). Review reports; address security problems and incidents; recommend changes in security and policies. Investigate inmate complaints and unusual incidents to identify causes and problems. Supervise transporting of inmates; maintain order; assign duties; inspect inmate activities. Maintain supervisory responsibility for completion of duties by subordinate personnel; perform scheduling, assignment, hiring, transfers, discipline, and promotion decisions. Conduct employee performance evaluations; promote career development of staff. Ensure subordinate personnel have skills and knowledge to conduct investigations and operations per agency policies. Approve leave, monitor overtime, and minimize overtime costs. Maintain staffing levels and time accountability; predictive scheduling of personnel. Testify in judicial proceedings; respond to inquiries regarding inmate status and procedures. Operate agency vehicle as assigned. Perform related duties as directed. Compliance with minimum training and standards of an accredited certification institution as set forth by the recommended FDLE guidelines and CJSTC. Tasks include a criticality component for responding to crime scenes or other critical incidents, with physical abilities to CJSTC standards to perform essential duties as needed. When called to assist in events, critical incidents, or emergencies, the following may apply: tasks involve physically demanding work and may expose incumbents to heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, hazardous agents, or dangerous situations.
