Johns Hopkins University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals to serve as Police Officers. Officers work in a team environment with integrity, professionalism, humanity and courage to protect the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. Responsibilities
Represent the JHPD’s vision, mission and values when interacting with university and community stakeholders; coordinate JHPD resources and activities to address concerns about university and community issues. Provide the full level of law enforcement work, enforce laws, rules and regulations governing safety and protection of individuals, buildings and property; perform problem-solving projects to enhance safety and prevent or reduce harm. Implement patrol priorities and community policing strategies; patrol designated areas by vehicle, bicycle and foot; identify safety hazards and report violations and unusual conditions. Maintain a visible presence to serve as a positive resource and develop relationships with community stakeholders to deter crime. Respond to calls for assistance and emergencies; de-escalate situations and coordinate appropriate responses to ensure community safety. Coordinate with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff on investigations of complaints, reported offenses, and disruptions. Conduct investigations of incidents reported on shift; coordinate preliminary investigative activities at a crime scene until arrival of investigative entities. Interact with the university community and establish rapport with surrounding communities. Direct traffic and assist with crowd control; provide safety information and conduct public safety programs. Participate in specialized unit activities such as crime prevention, investigations or special events as instructed. Inspect and maintain assigned equipment and clothing; operate law enforcement equipment as required. Perform or assist with the collection and preservation of evidence; assist with serving warrants and summonses. Prepare or assist with cases for court, including testifying when necessary; collaborate with local and state law enforcement agencies as needed. Perform office duties such as answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits and providing general information. Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED. Must be at least 20 1/2 years of age. Conditions of Employment
Employees must successfully complete a training academy and maintain certification as specified by MPCTC. Pre-employment and random drug testing may be required. A one-year probationary period applies after successful MPCTC training academy completion. Other: Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by MPCTC and a valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license. Clery Act designated campus security authority (CSA) member and compliance with Clery Act requirements. Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with certain outlined conditions for citizenship status; documentation is required supporting citizenship or permanent residency and pending naturalization. Must provide official proof of separation from the military in good standing with an honorable discharge prior to a conditional offer. Must not have a felony conviction. Must demonstrate physical ability to perform job. Must work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on-call, and as needed. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must pass written exam and oral interview. If applicable, previous law enforcement experience with no serious or repeated disciplinary actions or citizen complaints. * Finalists will undergo a comprehensive background check, medical exam, drug test, polygraph and psychological evaluation. CERTIFICATION INCENTIVE: $15,000 increase to base salary for MPCTC certification and related requirements. CITY RESIDENCY: 20% increase over base salary for Baltimore City residents. Non-Competitive Career Path for officers from Police Officer I to Police Officer III; annual step increases. Starting Salary: $70,000. Working Title: JHPD Police Officer. Location: JHU Homewood, Peabody and East Baltimore. Please note that employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks (criminal background, education, employment, references).
