Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Risk Specialist to join our Risk Management team. This position plays a vital role in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks that could impact the organization, with a strong focus on insurance claims and workplace safety. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience managing insurance claims (e.g., workers' compensation, general liability, property, auto) and a solid understanding of safety programs, incident investigation, and regulatory compliance (e.g., OSHA). You will work cross-functionally with internal departments, insurance providers, legal counsel, and third-party administrators to resolve claims efficiently, reduce loss exposure, and promote a safe work environment. You will also assist in the development and implementation of risk mitigation strategies, analyze claims data to identify trends, and support training efforts to educate employees on risk and safety best practices. Associate degree from an accredited college or university and two years general office/clerical and/or customer service experience; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. College course work will substitute for experience on a year for year basis. SKILLS TESTING REQUIRED
– Only applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and submit the required skills testing scores will be referred to the next step in the recruitment for this position. This position requires a passing score on the following County skills assessment tests:
Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Attention to Detail assessment
with a minimum score of moderate knowledge. The assessment tests can be taken in person or online/remotely through CareerSource North Central Florida. Applicants must contact CareerSource North Central Florida to arrange testing. Passing scores must be received by the Human Resources Office via email no later than five business days after the posting closes.
CareerSource North Central Florida is not responsible for submitting test scores to the County. All scores are valid for 2 years from the date of testing. Successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status. A Valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record must meet the requirements of policy. If, in the past 24 months, the applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record has more than three moving traffic infractions or three at-fault accidents (or a combination) or a driving under the influence violation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position. This is highly specialized and complex administrative support work for Risk Management in the administration of employee benefits, workers compensation and liability claims, and insurance. An employee assigned to this classification is expected to make decisions and act independently in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures; supervisor may review non-routine decisions. Work is performed under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation of results obtained. This is an emergency essential classification and all employees may be required to work during disasters or emergencies. A positive customer service focus is expected. Responsibilities
Enter benefits information into applicable payroll systems and third‑party vendor sites. Review complaints or requests for services from the general public or other County departments; route requests and complaints to the correct Risk Management employee/sector for response. Schedule appointments for higher level supervisors; arrange travel and make travel reservations. Assist in the preparation, recommendation and monitoring of departmental budget and prepare reports and statistical data. Prepare payroll and other fiscal and statistical data. Prepare and track Employee Action Forms (EAF) for the Risk Management division. Prepare and file office/departmental paperwork such as Board of County Commissioners agenda items, correspondence, reports, forms, meeting agendas and related material; take and transcribe minutes as required. Process all incoming and outgoing office/departmental mail and ensure proper distribution of correspondence. Prepare, interpret and maintain department policy and procedure manuals and interpret complex data. Manage the vendor certificate insurance program for Risk Management. Maintain Risk Management documents on the intranet, internet, and databases; scan and index documents. Track solicitations and contracts approaching the end of their term and coordinate renewal with applicable personnel. Administer the Risk Management bond program and produce biannual bond reports for analysis. Develop and conduct training for departments regarding policies and procedures relating to Risk Management. Identify problem areas and recommend ways to improve efficiency of Risk Management. Assist Risk Management personnel with daily duties including site visit reporting, wellness event scheduling, and setting up open enrollment. Ensure Risk Management records are accurate and maintained within state and federal requirements for records retention and auditing; prepare Records Destruction documentation as required. Drive a County and/or personal vehicle to perform related duties. Perform duties with professionalism and a sense of urgency. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and County enterprise resource planning system. Ability to use appropriate vocabulary, grammar, spelling, punctuation and accuracy in written materials. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to follow instructions, establish and maintain filing systems, and manage Risk Management activities. Ability to plan and organize workload to meet deadlines and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, departments, vendors, and the public.
