SALARY: $22.88 Hourly

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Risk Specialist to join our Risk Management team. This position plays a vital role in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks that could impact the organization, with a strong focus on insurance claims and workplace safety.

The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience managing insurance claims (workers’ compensation, general liability, property, auto) and a solid understanding of safety programs, incident investigation, and regulatory compliance (OSHA). You will work cross‑functionally with internal departments, insurance providers, legal counsel, and third‑party administrators to resolve claims efficiently, reduce loss exposure, and promote a safe work environment.

You will also assist in the development and implementation of risk mitigation strategies, analyze claims data to identify trends, and support training efforts to educate employees on risk and safety best practices.

Associate degree from an accredited college or university and two years general office/clerical and/or customer service experience; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. College coursework will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Skills Testing Required Only applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and submit the required skills testing scores will be referred to the next step in the recruitment for this position.

This position requires a passing score on the following four county skills assessment tests: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Attention to Detail assessment with a minimum score of moderate knowledge. Assessment tests can be taken in person or online remotely through the CareerSource North Central Florida. The applicant must contact CareerSource North Central Florida at assessment@careersourcencfl.com to arrange testing.

Passing scores must be received by the Human Resources Office via email at achr@alachuacounty.us no later than five business days after the posting closes. CareerSource North Central Florida is not responsible for submitting test scores to the Alachua County Human Resources Office. All scores are valid only for a period of 2 years from the date of testing.

Background Checks and Driver License Successful completion of all applicable background checks pre‑hire and ongoing are required. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.

A Valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If, in the past 24‑month period, the applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record has more than three moving traffic infractions or three or more at‑fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and/or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position.

Responsibilities

Review and investigate insurance claims, including workers’ compensation, general liability, property, and auto.

Coordinate with internal departments, insurance providers, legal counsel, and third‑party administrators to resolve claims efficiently.

Assist in developing and implementing risk mitigation strategies.

Analyze claims data to identify trends and support risk reporting.

Maintain accurate records and prepare reports, including departmental budget monitoring and statistical data.

Support training initiatives to educate employees on risk and safety best practices.

Enter benefits information into payroll systems and third‑party vendor sites.

Manage vendor certificate insurance program and risk‑management bond program.

Prepare and file departmental paperwork, correspondence, minutes, and reports.

Ensure compliance with state and federal records retention requirements and prepare records destruction documentation.

Assist Risk Management personnel with daily duties such as site visit reporting, wellness event scheduling, and open enrollment support.

Qualifications

Associate degree from an accredited college or university.

At least two years of general office/clerical and/or customer service experience.

Hands‑on experience with insurance claims management.

Knowledge of safety programs, incident investigation, and OSHA regulations.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to analyze risk and recommend solutions.

Customer service orientation and ability to work cross‑functionally.

Valid Florida Driver License.

Physical Demands & Work Environment Physical demands: frequent sitting, reaching, occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.

Work environment: moderate noise level, typical office setting, occasional travel to county sites.
